Valentin Šindler (January 30, 1885 - January 21, 1957) was a Czech opera tenor, actor and inventor of the folk character “Stréček Matěj Křópal z Břochovan.” He was born to merchant and innkeeper František Šindler and his wife Kateřina (Vitaská), and was one of seven children (three daughters and four sons). His two brothers, Antonín (1886–1972) and Václav Šindler (1893–1952) were also operatic tenor singers. He studied theology from 1905–8, but was advised to study singing instead. In 1911, he got a job at the opera of the National Theater in Prague, where he worked as a lyric tenor until August 31, 1913. In the period 1914–7 he was a member of the opera in Zagreb and was subsequently engaged in the State Theater in Brno, where he worked for fifteen years, 1917–1932.

From 1909 to the end of the twenties, he recorded for the Homokord and Polydor companies, sometimes under the pseudonym J. Cholínský [he was born in Cholina], making hundreds of recordings - folk songs, arias from operas and old Prague songs and couplets. In addition to his work at the opera, he was also a teacher and folk storyteller in revues and comedies for the radio.
