North Korea declares victory over COVID; Kim Jong Un's sister blames South Korea for outbreak

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un declared victory over COVID-19 on Wednesday in a speech to cheers and claps among thousands of unmasked officials sitting indoors.

His sister Kim Yo Jong suggested during the event that he too caught the virus, vowing "deadly retaliation" against South Korea, which the North blames for causing the outbreak from propaganda leaflets found near the border.

“If those dangerous acts that can bring the virus into our regime continue, we will respond by wiping out the virus as well as the South Korean authorities,” Kim Yo Jong said.

Kim Jong Un ordered the lifting of maximum anti-epidemic measures imposed in May, but never confirmed how many people actually caught COVID.
