Afghan refugees in Mexico hope to seek asylum in US

Thousands of Afghans are believed to have made their way to Mexico since 2021, when the Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan.
Many have been caught up in the surge of refugees and migrants seeking asylum in the United States.

They will fit right in.

The US promised Special Immigrant Visas to many thousands of Afghans who worked for the US government. I don't see what obligation we have to adopt other Afghans. Most Afghans, like many other people around the world, live in a poor country under authoritarian rule, but their lives aren't being threatened in Afghanistan. The ones who make it to places like Mexico en route to the US are almost always better educated Afghans of means. They could make important contributions to rebuilding Afghanistan, but will only fill low skill jobs in the US and compete with other low income people for government aid and housing. I know I sound harsh, but it's true.
