I'm a grad student in a publishing program and Josh's order of operations and emphasis on the importance of the agent is pretty damned accurate...and very similar to what we were taught my first semester. Slush pile and all - while it may not be quite the "where all agent-less/unsolicited manuscripts go to die" he makes it out to be, it IS a realistic expectation of submitting one.

It should be mentioned though, Josh, that most YouTube videos are viewed by people over the entire planet - as are your videos, and that the advise you give in this one about agents may vary a bit from country to country. In some countries - like my country Norway, agents are very uncommon and viewed as both a complicating and expensive solution, and 99% of all manuscripts received by the publishers are from the writer. Instead people tend to screen the web for great advise - like yours. :) In my experience the biggest weakness (other than the actual writing off course) is using lots of time on the book, and then five minutes on the presentation letter (pitch). The pitch is VERY important!

This video was really helpful! I've heard about the slush pile before but I've never had any idea what to do to find a legit agent. Btw I bought your book josh and it's great! I'm only a chapter in because target sent me a damaged copy but I'm looking forward to reading all of it:)
