People in a small village in Serbia are fighting to block an EU-backed lithium mine in their valley.
Last month the government restored mining company Rio Tinto’s licence to extract the mineral, which is used in electric vehicles.
Environmentalists and activists have planned a major rally in the capital Belgrade on Saturday.
Sara Khairat reports.

Dear Serbian brothers and sisters reject Rio Tinto

Serbia is not EU member. EU may do the mining on their land if they fancy it.
We don't need lithium neither electric vehicles, neither membership in EU.

Their argument, why they want to create a lithium mine is: It will be very beneficial for the European Union. Really? Serbia is not part of that union, and it is not going to be beneficial for Serbia. So there will be no digging in Serbia!!

Lithium reserves in Europe:
1) Germany
2) Czech Republic
3) Serbia
So, why aren't they mining in Germany?

Serbia a land of wise, smart, educated, beautiful people, a rich history and culture, with wonderful nature, rivers and valleys and great farm land. It was already polluted by enriched uranium bombs. The people know they need green fields and clean water.

They're avoiding mining in Germany (which has the largest lithium source in Europe) to protect the environment and air quality there. So, it's better to do it in Serbia, right? EU countries have brought centuries of suffering and pain to Serbia and its people, so a little lithium mining shouldn't matter at all...

Why not a lithium mine in France or Germany? why did the EU choose Serbia? Having sent them thousands of uranium bombs is not enough for them?

It's not just these hills. It's the entire Serbia and neighboring countries. Underground waters flow into rivers, acid rains, polluted air etc will not ask where the Serbian border is. If lithium is so good, Germany should do the mining in Germany, and they are not doing it. Neither should Serbia. We value our land, soil, water, and air just like the EU countries value theirs.

Correction it is not environmental groups its ALL OFF PEOPLE OF SERBIA ARE AGAINST THIS!!!!

German auto industry needs lithium so let them mine lithium (and dump poison in rivers) in Germany.

One interesting fact is that lady at the end of video is a minister in Serbian government and she got citizenship two months before becoming minister....🤔.... so her involvement in this project is extremely questionable.

Those Mine belong to Serbia people.
Should follow Indonesia doing... ban raw mineral export.
Indonesia's new round of commodity export bans will take effect on June 10th. Although the government will still allow some firms to export copper, iron ore, lead, zinc and anode mud from copper concentrates until May 2024, a ban on all bauxite shipments will proceed.13 Jun 2023

We, Serbs, are not dumb to allow mining of Lithium in our country. If Lithium is mined in our country most, if not all of our country will not have drinkable water and it will completely anihilate the environment (I am not talking some hippy stuff, people would at worst have to move away from Serbia because the encironment will be unlivable or at best have their quality of life completely destryoed).

No pasaran! No mining Lithium in Serbia! All Serbs regardless of political opinions agree on this one. EU can go mine lithium in their own countries.
