Watercolor Comparison - Gold and Silver (Artist vs Student Grade) Holbein vs Van Gogh

The Van Gogh version is much cheaper than the Holbein. I thought why not compare the two. I'll be using these to add accents in my artwork and for that purpose, I think the Van Gogh would work just fine. On black paper, the two brands don't seem to have much of a difference. On white paper, it was very apparent to me that the Holbein version is like tiny specs of Gold (or Silver respectively) mica suspended in a clear binder. Whereas the VanGogh one seems like there are specs of gold mica in a metallic gold binder, hence making it SEEM more pigmented, if that makes any sense.

Thanks for the comparison! I bought the Hoblein watercolor metallics last-minute because I wanted to buy the Coliro/Finetec ones but as a non-professional $6 SGD for one pan is too much 😓 My Holbein tubes were $8 SGD each, I feel for 15 ml it's worth it though, especially for glittery watercolors!! The mica pigment looks alive on paper when you apply it, the only downside is that it's more transparent than other metallic watercolors like the Van Gogh ones.

These are lovely! I do appreciate the using of white paper and black.

Also - this may not have been intentional, but I think doing it on thinner paper is AWESOME because the page buckling a bit just shows off how reflective and bright these paints are. That just feels like a bonus 🤩👍

Thanks for this--it's exactly what I was looking for! I don't use metallics in my watercolour painting, and didn't want to spend a lot. Just needed a bit of bling for a special project. Van Gogh it is.
