Don’t waste money on Ethernet Cables!

It’s important to choose the right Ethernet cable for your setup. Cat8 does have the latest features and technologies but it’s overkill when it comes to gaming and home internet setup. You shouldn’t need anything higher than Cat6 for most homes, since this offers speeds of 10Gbps for over 100 feet long cables!

Bro it’s unreal how you don’t have more subs and views. You are the only YouTuber I have seen that gives clear and concise information that is also easy to understand for the audience that is looking these types of videos up (noobs, i.e. me).

The amount of overcomplicated explanations about wifi and how it works from most tech channels on YT is astounding.

One thing I wish people talked about more is that the ratings are really mostly relevant when you do long runs. A Cat 5 (non-e) could do multi gigabit at shorter lengths. Most of us aren't running 100+ meter runs for home use

As a former cable tech who used all these cable types. You can run off CAT5 just as easily, it is literally free for a 3ft “jumper” cord if you find any spectrum van around you. Just ask the technician nicely and they will not care. Also, you can 100% get interference from your normal household appliances. Shielded cable is recommended but not required to have functioning service

I do shielded cat 7 for longer/permanent cables as future proofing and cat 6e for short connections that connect switches to devices.

Just a note for everyone as someone who installs network systems and runs data cables and fiber for a living. You really should only install Cat6A at the most because currently cables higher then that still haven't been approved for installation in homes.

You are just magically answering all the questions I’ve asked myself at some point and forgot. And I’m all for it.

Others have brought up that cat 5e can do 1gbps and that cat 6 does 10gbps only up to 55m (which is still overkill for homes), but I think it is also important to note the difference between solid copper and cca. CCA is copper clad aluminum. CCA is cheaper but more error prone and prone to breakage. It is also prone to deteriorating over time and giving you slower speeds.

One last thing that people often misunderstand about internet speeds. You are likely using up far less bandwidth than you think you are. A 4k stream takes 40mbps, a game typically uses 3-6 mbps. The only time those insanely fast speeds would matter are if you are downloading/uploading massive files or doing something such as hosting game servers with tons of players. In terms of gaming your biggest concern is your latency rather than your internet speed.

To make it simple:
CAT5 or CAT6 for Home-uses
CAT8 for Server-Server connection?

5e will do most homes fine. 6 will give you some time before equipment outpaces cables.
Cat8 if you gotta break walls or putting it in before drywall. Easy to assume 10gb will be slow in a decade or two.

About shielded cables. It’s better to go for them and pay the price. The thing is, is that not only the Ethernet cable is protected, but the surrounding wires are also also protected from interference of the Ethernet cable. I had a lot of noise going from my speakers because the rca cable to my speakers was close to my Ethernet cable which wasn’t shielded. Got a shielded one and everything went away

As an electrician I always inform home owners that the internet is only as good as the lines in you could have fiber or cat8+ to every port but draw 2 gigs because the line in is cat4-6, you’re greatest jump in an older area would be harassing your provider till they pull new cables for you’re area
