Growing tropical plants in the garden is so much fun! One of the best tropical plants to grow is definitely Elephant Ears, or Colocasia esculenta. These grow from large corms into magnificent plants very quickly. But since they are tropical they need proper care in the winter to ensure they grow each year. In this video I demonstrate how to care for your Elephant Ears over winter so you can enjoy them year after year. #elephantear #tropicalplant #gardening

I'm so glad you did this video, Devin! I've overwintered my giant elephant ears in the ground for the past four years. Now, I need to dig them up and separate them because they're getting so crowded. Now, I know what to do thanks to someone I trust. Thanks again for all your informative videos. Oh, and you're rocking the new hair! Looks good!

Before the Frost come Here in Michigan I cut mines back, bury the corm & root system deeper, cover it up with leaves or mulch…They triple in size every year!

Thanks so much. I'm going to be sad to dig it up, but I will look forward to planting next year.

Here in Oklahoma. Just let in the ground and they will be back every year. Be cautious about not well drained soil. They will die if water not drained.

Only been doing it a few years, but, I will wait til after the first light frost, take all the dirt and roots off, dry them up in the garage for a week and, then put them in the basement, covered in paper bags, until around Memorial Day (live twelve miles south of Philadelphia). They are multiplying.

So helpful! Question-if you are trying to keep moisture out of the bulbs by allowing them to dry thoroughly, why would you spitz them with water once a week?

I’m in zone 7. Can elephant ears be left in the ground?

Do you have a video on over wintering calla lilies?

Thanks for the great info!

Great ears in 6b! Any plan for next year yet? More in ground? Or containers?

Hi Devin, some of mine are still planted in pots outside, and my area (Buffalo) had an intense snow storm last week. Do you think that it’s too late to store the bulbs?

Hi Devin! Would the leaves survive if you had dug them up with the leaves and potted them to bring inside? Also I hope you put those leaves in water inside to enjoy!! 😆

Hi Devin- Fan here. What to do if my Elephant Ear has sprouts growing out of it? I noticed yours did in this video, but they're not mentioned and gone when you went inside to cure the corm.

Any suggestions on flowering elephant ear plants? I've read cut them to give the main leaves nutrients. Thanks for the video

Hey, do i need to cut back an indoor elefant ear for winter in the same way? I recently got an elefant ear cutting. In 4 weeks it has tripled in size, grew 2 new branches. i keep it indoors and in a vase of water and it seems really happy. I want to transfer it to a big tranparent glass jug filled with water put a grow light on it during winter. Temprature in my house will drop to about 14 - 17 c or 57 - 62 F ( heating is expensive due war / cost of living )

I just planted my elephant ears this year and I decided to take it inside before it frost. I live in Colorado. Will it survive and get big leaves?

I just rescued some from a neighbor, but he’d already cut off the roots. Is it possible to overwinter just the corms? Are the instructions any different?
