WALT WHITMAN

By the East River and Bronx
Boys were singing their songs
With the Wheel oil, leather
And the hammer
Ninety thousand miners
Taking the silver from rocks
And children drawing stairs
And perspectives

But none of them slept
None of them dreamed
They were the river
Not one of them loved
The huge leaves
Or the blue tongue on the beach
None of them paused
None was a cloud
And none looked for the ferns
Or the yellowing turns
Of the tambourine

By the East river and Queens
Boys are battling machines
And over the bridges and house-tops
The mouth of the sky
In the twinkling of an eye
Emptied herds of the winds-driven bison
As son as the moon
Wakes up al noon
The pulleys will spin
And the sky will cave in
A mass of colored heavens
Memory besieged
By a border of needles
And those who don´t work
Will be borne on the back
Of the hearse
Through New York´s mire

Los chicos son máquinas de batalla.
Y sobre los puentes y los tejados de las casas
La boca del cielo
En un periquete
Manadas vaciadas de bisontes impulsados por los vientos
Tan hijo como la luna
Se despierta al mediodía
Las poleas girarán
Y el cielo se derrumbará
Una masa de cielos de colores
Memoria asediada
Por un borde de agujas
Y los que no trabajan
Será llevado en la espalda
del coche fúnebre
A través del fango de Nueva York
