The rules in these competitions force the participants to adopt habits and tactics that are totally antithetical to good empty-hand fighting. These guys are constantly out of position, over-extended, and off balance. Moreover, they're so worried about getting touched (ever so slightly) that they never develop the ability to stay in the pocket and deliver meaningful strikes. Bas Rutten's, Karate Combat competitions are a far more valid expression of Karate.
