In 1940, Polish resistance fighter Witold Pilecki volunteered to enter Auschwitz to gather intelligence. He placed himself in the path of a Gestapo roundup in Warsaw and was sent to the most infamous concentration camp of WWII.

While inside, he formed a secret resistance group that grew to nearly a thousand men. Together, they smuggled out reports of Jewish prisoners' murder, starvation, and cremation.

Pilecki's intelligence was considered one of the most important sources of information the Allied forces received during WWII. Eventually, after over two and a half years in captivity, Pilecki himself escaped and rejoined the Polish resistance in Warsaw.

After the war, the USSR-backed government tried and executed Pilecki for treason. It wasn't until the 1990s that his story emerged from Polish archives to the surprise of even his own elderly children.
