Do you think the United States was important in China's economic rise?

US capitalists are making huge profits from China, with very cheap production costs.

General Motors in China is making huge profits even though it is bankrupt in the US. VW rose from the dead after producing cars in China.

the difference is that Chinese learn quickly and then compete with the boss.

Well, why did the US not do the same for India or Africa or South America? This tells us that US investment was a necessary condition but was not on its own sufficient in accounting for China's economic growth. Other factors were also at play, including the receptiveness of China to investment, it's workforce skills and training, the contributions of other countries like Japan, Taiwan, S. Korea and HK, the lack of bureaucratic, and regulatory impediments and so on.
Contrast China with the Philippines. The US has been in the Philippines since 1890, and the Philippines enjoyed all the trade privileges and status given to China, yet lags behind China and even Vietnam - a country the US was at war with.
This tells us that US trade privileges helps you only so far.

I do not think that the US helps China intentionally but by pure accident. In the 90s', India, Braziel, Russia, Turkey have equal chances. Unfortunately, leaders of these countries were popularly elected. Popular elections rarely produce competent leaders. They simply miss the opportunity. Chinese leaders were chosen under a system of meritocracy. Its leaders are much competent and able. They managed to seize the opportunity at every turn. Right now, the US is already behind China in most areas of science and technology. Of course, they are too proud to admit.

The reason why the US became so rich after WW2 is because its mainland was not affected after the war, in contrast to every other country across the world. Every other countries was more damaged in comparison to their overall size. That's how capitalism survive for so long, otherwise it would've died and socialism would be its successor.

As a Chinese, I would like to clarify something, for average Chinese people even some rich ones, we actually possess a quite positive opinion towards the US. Unlike other Western countries, America didn't try to rob and colonize China back in the old days when China was weak and poor after the collapse of the Qing, on the contrary, American people gave China significant economic and military support during the war against imperial Japan. A lot of Chinese think the US is a great country with high technology and virtue, we may view something in a different way, but we respect the American people and really hope to improve the relationship between our two countries. Thanks for reading this comment and sorry for my bad English if some misunderstandings occur.

The American motives to assist China since the 70s were: (1) to give China incentives to lean towards the west and distance itself from the former Soviet Union. (2) China’s readiness to open up and provide American corporations with good investment opportunities which helped them make trillions of dollars out of China over the last 45 years.

I remember those days, that overseas like UK, any goods were expensive and high unemployment, thatcher and Regan tried to build a globalization model, as the flood of Chinese goods, I was shock to see the prices dropped so much, and I could easily owned it, as the Chinese goods brought down the overseas inflation, and started getting propersous everywhere, more people gone on holidays. Went to China holiday, it was heart broken that seen proverty of Chinese people, not even eaten properly...

Its clear: as an autocracy, China was able to leverage the oligarchy that is passed off as free market capitalism in the US, with MFN. And now the genie is out of the bottle. Innovation is the US' only option, now.
As for India and the others they are shackled by democracy, no decisions, everyone has vested interests driven often by foreign funding that suits foregin governments, no one cares about the common good. Somewhat like Europe, now that its countries don't have the colonies to exploit for resources, and actually have to compete

Chinese people are smart and doing great. The U.S must thanks China for long cooperation. The U.S has enjoyed cheap labor and products to help its people enjoy long prosperity. Capitalist will fail later on. You will see. Why? Everything is becoming too expensive. Most low and middle class will suffer. That is why the U.S keep pushing other countries to change their political system so they can be exploited. Creating chao in other countries.

One point missed in this very good report was the fact that the Reagan administration with the help of Bob Dole actually encouraged manufacturers from the US to move their production to China and receive tax credits. I found the letters inviting manufacturers to do exactly this in my fathers office when he passed.

The United States has never been the country that invests the most in China. Before 2004, the United States ranked fourth among the countries that invest the most in China. Since then, the United States' investment in China has been decreasing year by year compared to other countries

USA is not the largest trading partner to China any more. It is ASEAN.

In 1970's US economist Friedman researched and came out with policy, that growth and profits should be only agenda of businesses. Jobs, workers welfare, social security and environment factors is Govt.'s headache. Many prominent universities of US were funded by corporates to research and many Ph.D were awarded to endorse this theory, all with motive to find new markets, thicken profits as the US economy was starting weariness in late 1970's. Corporates found this theory very attractive leading to corrupting US politicians to negotiate with China thereby pushing everything out of USA. Friedman was the economic advisor to Ronald reagan in 1982, the road to Hell for America began in early 1980's.

DID US CONTRIBUTE TO CHINA’S PROGRESS?

ANSWERS: YES. But So Was The Rest Of The World. Korea, Japan and Taiwan contributed, too.

But The MAJOR CREDIT Should Be Given To The Chinese Thrnselves.

I believe its because China has a centralized government where the CCP controls majority of the levers of the economy and chooses where investment goes and what areas are privatized for local Chinese capitalist and for foreign and they operate within China's rule
