As a 1960's kid we only had black and white tv back then, these Sherlock movies bring me comfort in a nostalgic way. Thank you.

Widely considered one of the best — if not the best — of the Basil Rathbone / Nigel Bruce series. The acting is superb, and this is a textbook example of low-budget filmmaking haughtily dismissed as “B-level.” Roy William Neill was a master at this. He had the pleasure of directing the finest Holmes-Watson team.

This duo is legendary as Holmes & Watson~always entertaining. My personal favorites are "House of Fear" & "The Hound of the Baskervilles, " this has the same vintage look.😊👍

I wish I could have seen William Gillette play Sherlock Holmes. He’s from my home state I live a few minutes away from his castle he was quite eccentric so I would assume he was amazing as holmes. I’m so pleased I get to see this duo though, by far one of my favorite Holmes and Watson duo ever. Jeremy Brett was my first Holmes so he will always be my favorite but basil is a close second.

In response to other remarks here -Basil
Rathbone’s Sherlock Holmes films were made in the US and shot in Hollywood. The first two produced by 20th Century Fox and 12 more by Universal. And shot in Hollywood studios. They weren’t English films.

Basil Rathbone WAS wonderful - surely the early inspiration for Jeremy Brett’s interpretation of the character. He has said as much.
The only irritating thing about these early films is that they made the Watson character a bumbling idiot - which he was not in Doyle’s stories. He was an army medical doctor with experience in Afghanistan as well as an author.
It was a sign of the times I suppose - and early filmmakers’ concepts of storytelling and characters. Still great to watch though. Loved Basil
Rathbone.
