Shoot Your Friends: Greenscreen

Much like how a t-rex can't see you if you stand still, computers think you are invisible if you are covered in green. Ever since George Lucas discovered this fact in 1928, filmmakers have been exploiting this error to get away with embezzling money meant for the set construction department. The green fabric industry has never been the same since.

@CalebJamesWhitaker Lots of programs can pull a key. It won't be exactly the same as what we did, but a lot of the principles apply.

@WhipEFlicks What I did is took some stock images of wolves, mountains, pyramids, etc, and made a 3D comp in after effects with the layers at different depths. Then for the wiggle effect, I applied a wiggle to the camera's position - it helps bring out the 3D effect of the layers and adds to the intensity.

For the blurry anime background, I just made a 5 frame animation of colorful noise with motion blur, and looped it.

8 years later and it's still one of the best keying tutorials I've seen for After Effects.

DUDES. Even though I've greenscreened a ton of times, I've NEVER done it like this through AE. I've always used UltraKey through premiere just because it has lots of control over how the subject is keyed VS what I've seen in AE. HOWEVER. This, in true Corridor fashion, has shown me an entirely new-to-me way to do it that's even MORE effective than what I was doing before, and I'm HELLA grateful, guys. I friggin LOVE this near-decade-old tutorial content. It's been as helpful as your new stuff to me, honestly LOL. I lllLLLLOVE YA!

@Boky505 Film is more sensitive to blue, digital cameras are more sensitive to green. That's why you see blue screens on some film shoots.

@RyanFarley000 Music comes from the soul, and also Logic 9. So bring the Logic 9 manual out to the forest, and meditate on it.

@SuperWario094 Nope, but some edge feathering and matte choking does a good job too, and CS4 has that.

@FreeReery I would suggest checking out the flip, or borrowing cameras. Schools and cable access stations have cameras to loan. Ask around your friends and family if anyone has a camera you can try out also.

@thaarv Should work fine. The camera we used here shot in 4:2:0.

@BEAST8446 We just duplicated the city layer, put it over jimmy, and masked out the buildings in front of his feet. It's the same method we used to mask out the area around Jimmy for keying, just used for a different purpose.

@NoPointSketch Sure. Part of it is dependent on what codec you use as well. We use ProRes on the mac side and DNxHD on the PC side.

@BTinHD format= h.264, size= 1920x1080, quality= 10, 000kbps

Guys, here are the programs they use:
they use Adobe After Effects (for VFX), Mocha For AE (for track motioning that is too advanced for AE), Boujou Tracking(for extreme motion tracking), Final Cut Pro (for editing/putting files together), 3D Studio Max (for CGI, FumeFX (CG Fire & Smoke Creator), and Ray Fire(simulates CG objects being destroyed/crumbling) are plugins they use for the same program), and Real Flow (a fluid and dynamics simulator for the 3D Industry)
there you go...
