Compound Miter Saw Fix - Blade Not Stopping When It Should

Here at Green Mountain Gold Trap production is key. For two or three days I was slowed down by my professional Craftsman 12" Compound Miter Saw due to the blade break not functioning properly.
Since I wasn't able to locate a video on YouTube addressing this issue, I figured I would post what I discovered.
Keep in mind, at times it could simply be due to the age of the saw and the fix is to go out and buy a new one.
ALWAYS BE SURE TO UNPLUG POWER TOOLS BEFORE SERVICING THEM.

Not to be a bit picky. I know being a YouTube content creator is tough, but just a thought...your intro should not be longer than the actual instruction part. For future reference.

3:33 - Explanation is here. Although I dont agree with his assessment. If the blade itself is spinning in place, then yea, you need to tighten the bolt. But if the blade stop function of the miter saw is not working, it's likely that the motor brushes have vibrated loose or are worn completely down. Just unscrew those large, flathead, plastic plugs on both sides of the motor housing. The carbon brushes are spring loaded to keep them pressed against the motor commutator (main spinning shaft). If you still have some of the carbon material left, then they were simply loose. Screw them back in, and you'll find the blade stop is working now. The blade stop function works by reversing the flow of electricity through the commutator. If it's not working, it means there is a loose electrical connection between the brushes and the commutator.

I used that same exact saw for 16 years and just got a slider last summer. That craftsman worked so well (and still did) that I gave it to a young guy I work with and I don't doubt he'll use it for another 16 years!

Thanks so much! I'd like to consider myself fairly knowledgeable as far as woodworking tools go having been in the trades for over 40 years but this just goes to show you dont know all there is to know! Something as simple as tightening the blade? Are you kidding me? I went through the steps to get to the arbor bolt and sure enough- loose! Not terribly but it was slightly loose and that cured the brake problem! Thanks! I almost went down and bought another one!!

So mine just did this all day. I did figure out it was a loose nut, found your video for validation on that. Thanks a lot. I didn't have the pleasure of getting to use it for a long time without it stopping (mine started making noise and not stopping on its own for quite a while). Then in the middle of a cut my blade actually just stopped half way through the wood. Don't know if that could have went really bad, but sure made me curse the place I got it from for a minute. Tightened that bolt and seems to be all good now. Glad I found your video kinda confirming this. Wish I could have heard the noise yours made before it would slow down enough to stop. Mine literally sounded like metal just kinda scraping. I thought maybe because it's so damn cold here right now.

Does anyone have a circuit diagram illustrating the Bosch electric braking system used for these saws?

"I don't have a minute... literally, I don't have a minute to wait for this blade to stop spinnin'..."

Yet you wasted 2:40 of all the time of your viewers on an advertising introduction for a 4:58 video?

I have had my craftsman for about 9 years now. I want to upgrade to a slider when I have the room to do so.

Probably best that you fixed that! Definitely want the blade to stop when you let off the trigger. Hard to hold a gold pan with missing fingers. Stay safe Joseph.

Thanks, I couldn't fin anything on it, either. We have a Skil saw and it never did this before. In fact, it spun once after the saw cut was done and not the next time, but then did it again. Not safe. I have work to do. Can't be messing around with a spinning saw blade. Thanks, again. (Nice music, too.)
