The Cell X™ device enables “define, pick, show and know” cell processing, based on quantitative metrics and Critical Quality Attributes. Cell X™ leverages Parker experience with imaging, precision motion and fluid handling with imaging, image analysis, and cell processing expertise developed at Cleveland Clinic. Cell X™ imaging is integrated with an automated image analysis platform that enables users to identify and characterize colonies based on user defined metrics, in accordance with the ASTM Standard.

Colony expansion and picking is a core function of many labs working with hematopietic stem cells, embryonic stem cells (ES), induced pleuripotent stem cells (iPS), mesenchymal stem cells (MSC), neurogenic stem cells, endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs), connective tissue progenitors (CTPs). Automation of the process of imaging, defining cell and colony performance, and then picking desired cells or colonies is an essential part of reproducibility. Dependence on the manual skills and individual judgment of technicians in these process steps will never provide the characterization, control, documentation and reproducibility that the next phase of cell therapy and diagnostics demands. We have demonstrated that manual colony counts of the same sample frequently differ by 100% within and between observers. Moreover, manual counts and picking methods provide no durable data regarding colony metrics of size, morphology and other attributes that an observer may use in making subjective selection decisions.
