Around Patagonia │ Part 2 - The Glaciers of the Beagle Channel

▶︎ ABOUT THIS TRIP
In April 2024, we explored the Beagle channel for 58 days onboard “TUPAIA”, our Dufour 35 from 1974. We started in Puerto Williams, the southernmost town in the world and sailed West, passing Ushuaia surrounded by wildlife, including whales, sea lions, a variety of seabirds and even orcas! At Punta Divide, the Beagle splits in two arms. We entered the Northwestern one (Brazo Noroeste), also known as the Glaciers Avenue. High mountains, steep slopes and snowy peaks from the Cordillera Darwin dominate both shores of the channel. We visited three out of the four islets opening along the N shore: Seno Pia, Seno Garibaldi, and Seno Ventisquero, each hiding huge rivers of ice rumbling into the sea. Though already a bit late in the season, we managed to sail TUPAIA through the dense floating ice and got quite close to the enormous seracs. After three weeks, we left Brazo Noroeste and explored Brazo Suroeste, on the other side of Isla Gordon. Thanks to a great autumn weather, we made the best of the many anchorage possibilities and the beautiful hikes offered by the less steep surroundings, even though some caletas were already frozen and the snow was more than knee-deep at times. In Estéros 1000 cascadas, Coloane, and Fouque, we sailed passed a couple of tidal and suspended glaciers that sadly seemed to be melting pretty fast. On the final stretch back to Puerto Williams, we made a few detours to visit more remote anchorages.

What you are doing, the shots you are getting with the drone, the layout of these videos, is quite simply the best sailing vlog experience on the internet, ever. I hope my other fav channels, Delos and la Vagabond will catch a glimpse and learn from you. Well done and best regards,

I rarely ever comment on a YouTube video, but this is by far, some of the most spectacular footage of any sailing, even nature channel. Stellar cinematography, color grading, editing, storytelling, scoring, and just overall inspiration. As someone who will be making a similar trip, I am equal parts inspired and anxiously awaiting your next upload. Impressive, to say the least. I don’t understand how this caliber of visual storytelling is free - this is documentary filmmaking at its finest; capturing the world around us. Merci to you both for this.

La parte menos conocida de la patagonia. Y para mí, la más interesante. Los fiordos de Chile son increíbles

The journey through the Beagle Channel aboard TUPAIA is a poetic exploration of nature’s grandeur and fragility. For 58 days, the vessel became a bridge between the vastness of glaciers and the resilience of the human spirit.

From the bustling wildlife near Puerto Williams to the awe-inspiring Glaciers Avenue, this adventure unveils a world where time feels suspended. The towering peaks of the Darwin Range and the thunderous rivers of ice pouring into the sea remind us of the raw power and fleeting beauty of the natural world. Sailing through floating ice to approach colossal seracs is not just a testament to the crew's skill but a symbolic act of reaching for the extraordinary.

Exploring Brazo Suroeste with its deep fjords and cascading waterfalls was like walking through a gallery curated by nature itself. The frozen caletas and knee-deep snow are humbling reminders of the world’s extremes, and the melting glaciers echo a quiet urgency, a call to reflect on humanity’s role in preserving this fragile balance.

This voyage was more than a journey; it was an immersion into the timeless dance of creation and decay, a meditation on the interconnectedness of all things. It’s an experience that leaves one with not only memories of breathtaking beauty but also a profound sense of gratitude and responsibility.
