Recently I saw belts for CMM machines. Similar to GT2 concept but belt contains thin strip of stainless steel so is unstreachable. Don't know what the prices are for it. You can check since your idea is nice.

Interesting... I'm in a similar situation looking for a DRO for a lathe.
The big issue is choosing and buying the scales particularly for an electronics hobbyist who could make up their own controller board.
Unfortunately for something like this once you factor in the cost of the Pi, the touch screen and the controller... The cheap dro controller displays from bangood and aliexpress start looking quite economical. Plus they're a single unit and a little more robust for a workshop environment. They also don't run the risk of a forced android update killing off your DRO. Google has become quite insidious in that fashion.
It would be interesting to see the full hardware setup you have for this.

Wouldn't a rotary encoder be susceptible to backlash of the lead screws? Where a traditional linear scale eliminates that problem by not being tied to the screws.
