Using green methanol as a fuel

Stephen B. Harrison, Managing Director, at Sbh4 Consulting, and Dr Moritz Mickler, Business Development Manager of Adsorption and Membrane Plants at Linde Engineering, discuss green methanol and using it as a fuel on gasworld's, Hydrogen: Markets Reimagined, webinar.

It’s a whole new era for the hydrogen sector, as the nexus of clean energy and decarbonisation truly moves forward – and with hydrogen front and centre of that great transition.

There is investment and momentum in hydrogen like never before – from blue to turquoise and of course green. New innovations, applications and sourcing channels continue to emerge, and our view of hydrogen markets continues to evolve as a result.

Green methanol is carbon neutral. Ammonia is carbon neutral. What's the difference?

Neither fuel theoretically emits carbon dioxide when we look at the whole cycle. So why is one better than the other?

Now I know that practical reality can be different. We can't really compare the two technologies without doing them. And then you have to look at them very clearly to see what what the costs and the advantages are.

But this idea that methanol emits CO2 and ammonia doesn't is nonsense. As long as the CO2 to make the methanol is coming from the air or any other non-fossil fuel source there is no problem.
