Volantex Trainstar Ascent 1400 unboxing, build and thoughts on this big rugged high wing plane. Seems like it would be a great base for mods or just flying around as is. Big bush wheels mean it will handle any flying field.
Flying weight with 3S 3000mAH - 1550g
Max current on 3S - 35A
Two props supplied, maybe 3S (12x6) and 4S (10x6)
CG 65mm, right on the factory marks (not 53mm as stated in the manual)

Still glitter in the eyes - the boys from good old days are still boys...modern youngsters is bloody hard to impress, indeed....

Another relaxing review thanks Andrew. I am now having some fpv fun with my new E-Sky Eagles after watching your review on it. It's too under powered for adding floats so this one could be my replacement float plane IF I can find suitable floats. My plastic unibody Volantex ASW has lasted amazingly well so its great to see this in plastic too. Keep up the good work!

I have just seen the price of this plane and it’s on offer at the moment for under €100 kit and €120 pnp ... that is a lot of plane for that price. Looking forward to see the flight review

I've been flying and fixing mine for about two weeks. The main gear bolts bent easily on a "hard-ish" landing so I replaced them with sturdier hardware and added a washer and lock nut inside the fuselage for each bolt. Also, the axle nuts on the gear will tighten and loosen (depending on side). I used blue "LokTite" but will probably replace them with "Dubro" axles and retaining collars. A small issue: the decal sheet had only one decal for the vertical stab. No place on it for a second one. Weird. Nice plane though. Other than the gear it is a tough bird. I hope all will go well with your upcoming flights!

I have a couple of the Tough Trainers the Ascent was based on and modded and flew one of them to death. Literally. It flew great with twins as well. The foam was some of the most dense I've seen. Went through a tree once with very little damage. The tree fared worse. I wanted to get the Ascent when it first came out a while ago but no one in the U.S. stocked it and I won't order from Banggood because of their deplorable shipping preparation, or should I say lack thereof. Planes from them always showed up damaged. The landing gear mounting into the PVC was a weak point on the Tough Trainer so I made a plywood and aluminum brace on the inside. Bigger wheels help keep the rotational forces down in grass though so that was a good stock change. Control surfaces should have been a little bigger on the original in my opinion. I also thought the original was way under powered. Spec PNP was 2200mAh 3S. 4S would have been a better stock spec with the supplied low KV motor. My last mod was to twins with 3000mAh 6S. Forty-five minute flight time. Great workhorse aircraft as noted. :)

A plane i nearly bought, but i hold back, i see a few design faults, like if a wing clip breaks in the fuselage how to get it out and replace it, dont like the little battery hatch under neath, this could of been a Tundra killer but somehow close but not close enough, the 1400 riot is a better plane. But as always great build and review, look forward to seeing it fly

Very cool airplane. And looks like a bit heavy. I like heavy planes

Andrew, why does the kit come with two propellers. The small one does not allow the nose cone to be installed. Am I meant to use the large one in the kit ? Great review. My control horns had to be epoxy glued in.

Hi Andrew, as the battery bay is in the bottom, if you were installing a ZOHD Kopilot Lite Autopilot, how would you go about installing it? If it were installed behind the Battery, when the plane is turned over the AP would be upside down ? Am I totally missing something :) Regards, Pete

Volantex  made a Trainstar similar to that already this must be the latest version, we had one and it flew like a pig. Lets hope they've improved it a lot!  Good Luck!.
