HOW TO START A CR500 | Old-school style

Today I show you how to start a CR500 the way old-school guys swear by!
1. Lay over bike until fuel starts coming out of the over flow pipes
2.Put the bike in second gear and rock it back and forth 10 times
3. Find the compression, bring kick starter to the top and give it the hardest kick of your life (with out breaking your leg haha)

That is exactly how Richard Thorwaldson taught me how to start my CR500, from dead cold, in 1999, right after I bought it new.

Been along time since I've heard a 500 2 stroke crosser, back in the day I raced a 92 Eric Gorr tuned cr500 with a pro circuit pipe it was a animal lol

Choke on

5-8 slow kicks to get the fuel into the carb (or put the bike in 2nd gear, rock back and forth to get the fuel started)

It was hot already! I had a 87 and a 90 I use to have to cold crank it three or four times first bring it to the top of the compression stroke then kick it usually holding full throttle! That how I would cold start it! Great bike!!!

There is actually one more thing you can do to make it easy. These beasts are harder to start in cold weather, after going through the 2 steps, turning on gas, tipping over, rocking back and forth in gear, then you get down by the carburetor, and blow back through the carb over flow breather tube. you can actually hear it clearing out. even if it is very cold, it will start first kick. Love the sound and the power of those bikes. Rode them for over 20 years
