What are some of your favourite tips for mixing bass?

"Making an instrument more focused" -- that's the sauce right there.

I like the short vids - they're easier to remember.

all the tips here are good for studio (frequency separation doubling + saturation, boosting the 800hz etc) ....But I got one for live for ya....when your bass player can't hear of feel themselves and their amp is already loud enough ...thinner shoes..what?? Thick boots disconnect the vibration from amp through the floor..you don't feel it.. Wear thin shoes (or none), and you don't have to turn up that bass...you are connected to every note - even if you are mixed in low...your body stays with the bass... And if you can't hear the kick..well ;)

Yes definition vs volume is a world of difference. Same with live, I'll push my mids ( unaffecting FOH sound) as just boosting everything can cause problems with my vocal mic pic, king it up. Excellent point Warren !👍

Definitely, I think even boosting the high treble a bit sounds good for electric bass

Nice tip Warren, i'm not as profound as you on these subjects, but i've always added an extra copy of the DI or the midi bass and just highpass it up to the highmids some mild distortion or saturation on it and blend that in very subtle. It's fashinating really how many different ways you can get similar sounds. However i must admit i tend to overdo the bass all the time. It's the EDM's fault. I want a big boomy bass which i sidechain to the kickdrums, i'm sorry all rock guys out there. But it is my understanding that sidechaining seems to be happening in metal music these days too. The bigger the bass the more massive the sound is gonna come across

Good tip. Also the bass pickup makes a huge difference. A P Bass’s split coil humbucker is the best bass to sit right in a mix and yet still get note definition.

As you know Warren, many underestimate the dark art of recording bass. Forget about bass, understand about cut, go for the elastic band and forget about moving ashtrays 👍

Waves API 700 or 800Hz boost (plus the sound of the EQ) is magic.

Good point! When slamming to tape, I will bump up the three frequencies that define every instrument. Plan it. IE: Advance decisions such as the kick or Bass low boost (Hmm should the Bass Live @ 80Hz and Kick live @ 100Hz or the other way around?) Decisions need to be made when Tape is the media. Upper mids I like on Bass guitar growl info is around 625. 6 string a bump @ 250, 1k 3.5k and 10k (You can remove it but if 10k isn't printed, it can't be added) etc.
Two guitars? One axe's low end information with one living at 350hz the other @ 250 grab a parametric boosting a tight q on all. Is it a felt kick beater or wooden? Identify and boost the attack frequency evident on which beater etc. I sweep all input signals when setting the gain and such discovering individual tonal structure
, and take notes.

I’ve found that the bass tone going in is of particular importance for it to sit properly as darker tones or more scooped are harder to brighten/define without artifacts

I really, really appreciate these wonderful recording tips! Please keep them comming.

Literally just happened to me. I'm learning and mixing my bands latest project. 1st rough draft, bassist responds he thinks bass is too low. I honestly already thought it was too loud. So I added a little dirt and messed with the eq a bit, actually brought it down to where i thought it should be, and he seems happy now

I am loving these little "Shorts" tips. I have been recording for decades and know lots and get great finished product, but never hurts for validation from another expert. Thanks man. Cheers.

I’ve been using a trick where I duplicate the bass track and cut out all the low-end and then blend it in with some drive/saturation. It adds all of the DEFINITION without the LOUD by accentuating everything above 800hz.
Bonus: you get a choice of how much drive you want to add from subtle harmonics to full distortion so it works in almost any context.

Fantastic. Going to give this a try right now, as I am precisely having trouble hearing definition of a recently recorded bass (on an old ampeg B25b). I can hear the low end, and you definitely miss it when I mute it, but it lacks definition.

I'd love a video about techniques to make the sub bass on a mix kick in just right 😬

No amount of EQ would have done justice for Jason Newstead
