Ah yes the first show that made me realise ‘maybe I shouldn’t watch everything that claims to have Sapphic content’. An age old lesson

Supernatural is definitely another example...

I think we all are still bitter about how they treated Lexa lol
I stopped watching the 100 on season two and completely gave up on knowing what was going on after Lexa's death, I would say I'm still very much angry of what they've done.

Honestly, the end of Season 5 should have been the end of The 100 & I will never not be sad about it.

For me, the perfect ending would be Clark staying with Lexa's tribe instead of going off on her own. There, she and Lexa would recover from all the trauma. Clark abandons her own tribe and doesn't need to "lead them or save them" bc they are truly just as sick and twisted as the mountain people. Lexa doesn't die. Together she and Clark continue to lead toward peace. A peace where their tribe no longer needs to be in constant fight mode fending off the horrific mountain and sky people. I stopped watching the show after the constant torture and fighting. This show needs to be updated, I mean it is way worse than the real life 2020.

I remember back when I was a *heterosexual* my friend asked me why I watched the 100, and I said it was because it had a great plot
then she asked me why I stopped watching the 100 after season 3, and I said it was because the plot kinda got boring

if you know you know

Yeah some of your examples for why the show jumped the shark are kinda flawed, misguiding and half baked even if the show managed to jump a ridiculous mega 🦈.

And you didn't even really mention the whole Bloodreina/cannibalism thing, and because you didn't really talk about seasons 6 or 7 the aliens or the weird time dilation stuff

i don't mind jumping the shark as a way to keep things interesting after seasons, but in the 100 this plot device took away from important character development. we only see the cast in crisis and sex scenes, there is no emotional progression along with the story progression. they try, and it has given us significant moments, but the never ending change in 'scenery' feels like a cheap device to patch up bad writing. i've been a fan since season 1, but this year they exhausted me

It’s interesting to hear your take on the 100’s jumping the shark method to avoid repetitiveness. That’s always sth im worried about with shows, I remember getting really fed up with Once Upon a Time when I realised they would always return to Storeybrooke. The ‘jump the shark’ gimmick was used to ensure the characters were tied to that setting and to me it felt regressive.
I probably wouldn’t have liked the 100’s (I guess) almost satirical use of the tool, but in theory I can certainly see the appeal. Great video!!

Honestly they lost me with season 3. I love the first two seasons to this day though.

Honestly between their treatment of Clexa and their treatment of SuperCorp, I kind of was just put off the CW altogether. They've made it all too clear that they don't even have an ounce of concern for representation, it is a purely economic prospect for them.

Can you call it 'jumping the shark' when the show super explicitly lays out the fact that literally anything is possible within its premise by the end of pilot?

If so, the SyFy original show Eureka (currently streaming on Prime) is a very frequent shark jumper, because despite it holding to its original premise with fairly minimal stretching, things are definitely shaken up in unexpected ways on a semi-regular basis just to keep it new and interesting starting in the very first season. This is probably due to the fact the writers went in assuming they were destined for a second season cancellation, given that it was a science fiction television show airing before 2010 that was neither set in outer space nor based on a comic book superhero property.

I think it's such a hidden gem that I don't even wanna spoil the major plot points that shake things up, so let's just leave it at 1) the show writes newly introduced characters so well across the board that you often can't tell who's a future recurrent with plot armor and who's just a redshirt without checking episode counts on IMDB, 2) the show is both episodic/procedural and serialized in such a way that you can't predict what's gonna be reset to the status quo by next episode and what's gonna have a lasting impact on the wider series arc, and 3) events have a way of diegetically unhappening within the canon of the show, so you can't ever safely assume that any given arc will actually be resolved in a linearly causal way.

If I had to pitch the show without explaining the seemingly unimpressive premise, I'd tell you it's The X-Files meets Futurama meets The Good Place. The pilot is actually a self contained feature length film that's enjoyable purely on its own merits and not just as a setup for a TV show, so it's a great way to dip your toes in and see if it's for you without feeling obligated to hit next episode just to satisfy your curiosity about the outcome of some contrived cliffhanger.

Also there is some great material there for left wing political analysis, especially when it comes to police and the military.

Have I seen this show? No.
Will I watch the video to hear Riley's voice and analysis? Yes.
Will I learn new things today about media? HELL YES.

Supernatural is another series that I think leans into intentionally jumping the shark - I believe season 5 had God as the main antagonist, and the next 10(!) seasons were basically, “How do we top that?!”

I get people were mad about Lexa, but really it was just a repeat of Tara from Buffy with a less likable character, when there was so much weirder stuff going on. I mean, not to spoil the last episode, but it does feature a character talking to an omnipotent alien consciousness and complaining that all of humanity EXCEPT them passed the grand test of humanity's worthiness, and the alien goes "um, you literally murdered someone during your test, take a chill pill."
