Fears have continued to mount of a possible volcanic eruption in Iceland.

An immediate evacuation was issued on Tuesday, and residents were allowed back into the town of Grindavik in small numbers to retrieve belongings.

Authorities later said the area around the town was evacuated after sulphur dioxide was detected.

Absolutely terrible, here’s hoping that everyone is a safe distance when it erupts. Condolences to all the people losing their homes though, that sucks no matter what

As long as everyone is safe, that's the most important thing. I truly understand why people would want to go get their things, especially if they have emotional ties to them, but a memory isn't worth a life. Be careful up there! I hope everything calms as quickly as it's kicked off.

How sad. The area around Grindavic is lovely. Spent a few days around there a few years back.

Fear-mongering nonsense. "They have 5 minutes to grab their stuff" - Grindavik was evacuated last Friday - that's 5 days ago, and not a lot has happened since. What is stopping the home owners from collecting their belongings at their own leisure?

I feel like the people in that country are taken care of by their government way more than the USA. They seem way more at peace compared to how we'd act here. They look as though they have hope, and can rebuild their future easily. Most of us here in the states would be homeless with no hope of rebuilding our futures, so many people wouldn't even evacuate.

Reporter : "how does it feel to have to pack up and leave your home and possibly never see it again because a volcano could burn it down to ashes?" She asked the question like these poor people deserved it or something. Some news reporters are so numb it's disgusting.

In Iceland, which was created by volcanic activity, It's a shock to have a sinkhole. Also, I will visit Iceland at least once because Iceland is a beautiful city with aurora view. I hope Iceland don't do much damage
