Also in the Northwest Corner of campus is Pupin Hall. At 538 West 120th Street, Pupin is home to the Physics and Astronomy departments. Critical atomic research took place in this building, including the design and construction of the first cyclotron by John Dunning. In 1939, a uranium atom was split in the building's basement - which ultimately led to the development of the atomic bomb. Pupin is also where the laser and FM radio were invented. The Rutherford Observatory sits atop Pupin, from where it is possible to observe planets and stars within our solar system.

It is also important to emphasize why this building is called Pupin. Mihajlo Pupin was a Serbian physicist and diplomat. Along with Nikola Tesla, he is one of the greatest scientists of mankind
