Composite resins have led to significant advancements in restorative dentistry offering patients a highly esthetic and minimally invasive option. It successfully overcame the drawbacks of silicate cements and polymethyl methyl methacrylate used previously for esthetic restorations. Many types and classes of composite resins have evolved over the years in search of the perfect esthetic restorative material. Dental composites are a conglomerate of a continuous phase of organic resin matrix and a dispersed phase of inorganic fillers bonded via a coupling agent. Composite resins polymerize by an addition polymerization mechanism brought about by the release of free radicals by chemical or light activation.
This video explains the introduction of composite resins, their composition and different classifications proposed for composites.
