Mr. Ballen on YouTube aka John B. Allen, thank you for the story. Thank you, Fastball, for writing one of the most awesome songs ever about the last ever trip of a 80+ Alzheimer couple going on a trip - their way.

If you take it verbatim this song's word meaning. It sounds like a reference to Heaven in the Book of Revelation. Heaven will be paved with Gold streets. When you can't see your shadow, it’s because you're dead. Dead people don't have shadows. In Heaven, you are in your Spiritual bodies. Liking the path, they’re on the straight and narrow path to Heaven.

I remember when this song came out. It was always on the radio. I would sing my heart out and bop away to it, having no idea what it was actually about. I loved this song. Now that I know what it's actually about, it's not such a happy fun song. I still love the song, but it won't be the same knowing the sad meaning behind it.

They made up their minds
And they started packing
They left before the sun came up that day
An exit to eternal summer slacking
But where were they going without ever knowing the way?
They drank up the wine
And they got to talking
They now had more important things to say
And when the car broke down
They started walking
Where were they going without ever knowing the way?
Anyone can see the road that they walk on is paved in gold
And it's always summer
They'll never get cold
They'll never get hungry
They'll never get old and gray
You can see their shadows wandering off somewhere
They won't make it home
But they really don't care
They wanted the highway
They're happier there today, today
Their children woke up
And they couldn't find 'em
They left before the sun came up that day
They just drove off and left it all behind 'em
But where were they going without ever knowing the way?
Anyone can see the road that they walk on is paved in gold
And it's always summer
They'll never get cold
They'll never get hungry
They'll never get old and gray
You can see their shadows wandering off somewhere
They won't make it home
But they really don't care
They wanted the highway
They're happier there today, today
Anyone can see the road that they walk on is paved in gold
And it's always summer
They'll never get cold
They'll never get hungry
They'll never get old and gray
You can see their shadows wandering off somewhere
They won't make it home
But they really don't care
They wanted the highway
They're happier there today, to

The first time I hear it got me!!! The 90s!! Yea. I like it right away because it reminds me of the Mexican song BÉSAME MUCHO! Iam a musician and Mexican too! So it’s definitely a part of my repertoire!!!👍👍👍👍

What a beautiful song in remembrance of an elderly couple. I’m hoping that’s how their lives ended. Together.

What a song, what a story behind it! One of the most disturbing existential songs ever. What a way to exit!
