How I Breed My Dorper Sheep In-Season (NATURALLY) // Breeding Sheep on Pasture Grass

In this vlog I talk about how I prepare my Dorper Sheep for fall breeding. I raise my Dorper sheep on a grass-based farm and breeding happens naturally... no artificial hormones or heavy grain flushing. I flush my ewes using pasture management techniques. In this video I share my goals for breeding, how I am managing my Dorper rams and ewes in 2 groups. I also show some tools (such as a breeding harness for the rams) that I have incorporated for this breeding season on my sheep farm.

I hope you enjoy this video on how I breed my Dorper Sheep in season on a pasture based farm!

I hadn’t even heard of a breeding harness and wonder how it works. It’s a good thing I don’t yet have sheep. I need to study how to take care of them. Your videos teach me many things and I’m grateful for your sharing of your experiences. God bless

Loved this video. The old ram (tup in England) knew just what the harness meant and he looked more that happy. The new ram will work it out over time. I take it that your not any where near the coast, the reason for asking is if you are then collect some seaweed and either give it to the sheep or spread it over the land. Its great for sublimating the soil with trace elements. As always thanks for posting.

good job catching them at the end. two tricks i use: either my bucket with grain that the come right to (only when i have something in it) or a lasso. the lasso has saved time spend chasing, but you gotta practice ;)

We lost 4 lambs last year, due to goiter...because we didn't anticipate (or know about) iodine deficiency. It seems like we're always learning something.

We get regular twin pairs and last year had our first triplet birth. The little girl was underweight...less than 5 pounds...and couldn't stand or hold her head up, so we ended up bottle feeding her for a couple of months...so, now, I'm Dad. It was a lot of work and reminded me of years earlier, when my kids were infants, but it's rewarding to see little Sabrina thriving now.

I had sheep in my teen years. I never thought through the stress reducing issues and was too tight for supplements as you do. Good job.

Something interesting ., some farmers here in SA developing a new sheep breed its a cross between a damara and dorper they call it the meat master, looks promising for dry and arid regions ..great footage as always best of luck for the new season

Hello, great video. I'll need to watch some more to see if you did end up getting some of those triplet lambs you hoped for! We did have the pleasure of a set of triplets last year and my experience has been that it was very hard on the ewe, especially if she's a good mother. Keeping the weight on her has been very hard although if you could wean at 3 months or so (we could not with just a single paddock) that would help a lot. So I'd much prefer twins from this point.

So, just a thought, maybe put the harness on once or twice earlier in the year before you need to put it on for the season. Just so they get a little used to it. I don't know I don't have cheap. Thanks for your videos.
