I kinda disagree. People bought RDR1 *without knowing* that the story would be anti cliche. We didn't know that Marston would become a tragic figure instead of the hero because Rockstar keeps everything a secret. We saw the trailers and we were hyped for an actual western movie as a video game. And it was a fresh wind of air. The soundtrack, the atmosphere, the physics, the vast open world with its incredible scenery and the absurd amount of details made us buy the game.

The things you mentioned were the cherry on top and will help never forget this masterpiece.

I went in knowing NOTHING outside of "Cowboy". What a wonderful blind playthrough.

RDR2 and RDR1 also shows how biased and hypocritical we ourselves are, if we were to be the Pinkerton's we'd probably justify everything that they did, but since we're on the "bad" side and since we got attached to the main characters, we feel like they never did any wrong and we also justify every wrong they did.

There’s a LOT of revenge in that story. Almost like John talks about how each member of the gang wronged him for siding with Dutch and Jack grows up to confront Edgar Ross

Tell me you've never seen an old fashioned western on 40 seconds or less without telling me you've never seen a western.

I would just like to say that moral ambiguity is very common in old spaghetti westerns

I finished RDR1 last month after playing the second installment for the last few years. John’s death caught me off guard. Not because he died, I knew he was going to die- it was how he died that was so surprising. It was swift and brutal.

Video games from 2005-2014 will forever be the best decade. Might surpass in sales because gaming is so popular now, but not in innovation and creativity. There were so many amazing games during that time, including RDR1 and GTA IV and V.

If Red Dead made a tv series, it would be one of the best shows of all time that could possibly top Breaking Bad. Which reminds me, Bryan Cranston would be amazing at Edgar Ross

And the setting played an amazing part: The era of the fall of the Wild West and the rise of the civilized world made a great twist that films and games never really dove into. Can you believe that the m1911 was made in the game’s time period. Lol

Ro kstar already had the classic stylish western game which was Red Dead Revolver that's why they changed the way the game would progress in RDR1 to make it more realistic instead of cartoonish like Red Dead Revolver was

This is pretty accurate. John may be hunting down his former partners who betrayed him, but he doesn't even want revenge against them

I don't think that it's a deconstruction of what westerns were, but a historical take on the average bandits of the era whom never got immortalized because it was such common place in the real historical wild west. The game was going to hypothesize a possible gang of the period and reference the real historical data to see how good at being outlaws a gang could ever realistically be. The story of a such grand outlaw gang couldn't possibly be told in 3 hours, but would have 40 hours plus of villainy that is not brought to justice.

They did it on purpose to make the end of John’s story first. He would speak of his past and that’ll attract a lot of attention on how John got there. Speaking of a classic western story of an outlaw and the downfall of it. I read that while they where working on the game, they where already making plans of the second game

I have to disagree. The story was great, but most of us bought the game because it was an open-world western, when just about anything else open-world was fantasy or GTA clone.
