We recently visited Hatteras Island, one of the barrier islands that make up one of our favorite vacation destinations - the Outer Banks of North Carolina. While there, we checked out several local restaurants and we are going to tell you all about three of those places in this video! We'll tell you why it was more difficult than usual to find an open restaurant in the Outer Banks in the summer of 2021. But as we searched for local restaurants with good seafood and North Carolina style barbecue, we did find several and these three were the best. These three eateries combined high quality food with great service. We highly recommend the restaurants in this video: Diamond Shoals Restaurant, Sandbar & Grille Restaurant, and Pop's Raw Bar & Grill - all located in Buxton, North Carolina on Hatteras Island.

Check out our Top Ten favorite things to do in the Outer Banks:

Here is the South Carolina playlist we mentioned at the end of this video. If you are planning a trip to South Carolina, you may find some helpful information here:

As a teenager in the early to mid 1970's, I lived in Hatteras village. My step-dad ran a restaurant called Captain Peele's. I worked there filetting flounder and helped with prep work. We had a Captain's table and Bootsie Austin, Captain Clam, Captain Foster and many others would come in and drink coffee, eat lunch and chat about fishing and boats. I also was able to make good money filetting fish at the docks. I remember the large marlins hanging at the Marlin Club. Surfing was also something I thoroughly enjoyed. I attended school in Buxton. I was friends with Gaston Foster, Dee Hollis and many others. It was a great time for a teenager to grow up. I'm now in my 60's and have some wonderful memories of those years.

Next time you get down there, the Quarterdeck in Frisco has the best crab cakes and hush puppies I’ve ever eaten.
Haven’t eaten at Dans, but have the other two.

Stopped at Diamond Shoals Restaurant during a quickly planned road trip in June of 2021. It was great, I wish I could remember waitress's name but she was awesome. I have fallen in love with the Outer Banks, which is shocking because I was born in Greensboro, NC but never made to the Outer Banks until I was a "seasoned citizen". I have missed out but trying to make up for it now. There are "NO" bad places in the Outer Banks to enjoy meals and history.

If you go inside the lighthouse, it has a marble plaque that says "Body's Island."

Staff shortages seems to be a theme these days. People collecting more on unemployment than working is not an incentive to work a job unfortunately. I love the views by the blue restaurant. I didn't catch the name. The food looked good at Pop's. I responded to your comment on one of my videos but it wouldn't post my response. I've had that twice this week for some reason.

All these houses are huge there i bet it is not cheap. I heard Vegas is also having the shortage of staff. I bet there is so much great seafood there!!!! So cool you guys were able to travel with Dad. Can’t beat that view for sure. How often do you guys go to the Outerbanks?

The staffing shortages make sense. The island is very far from any grocery stores or apartment buildings that would be affordable enough to house the people that work there, The island is 200 miles of beach front properties. People don't live there year round. It's not a normal city

We had no luck at all finding anyplace to eat in the northern part of the Outer Banks when we were there at this same time. Everything was either closed or so packed, we wouldn't have felt comfortable eating there. Also, I don't think my kids would have liked any of these places. Overall, we were very disappointed and frustrated with dining in the Outer Banks. They definitely need more family restaurants.
