ESSEX, MASSACHUSETTS: Welcome to Essex, Massachusetts, home to Woodman’s, where they invented the New England style deep fried clam! During our trip to New England we were not going to miss this opportunity to eat the king of deep fried seafood, and we got a gigantic $284.75 Fisherman’s Platter!

Friends in the video:

At Woodman’s they also have a host of other deep fried seafood, including clam strips, scallops, shrimp, and fish, plus onion rings and fries. We decided to order a huge fisherman’s platter, including a mix of everything piled high onto Jeffrey’s lobster tray.

While all the seafood at Woodman's of Essex is delicious and remarkably deep fried and crispy, still nothing beats the deep fried clams - the original deep fried clams.

Woodman's opened in 1914, my family has been going there since 1916. So much love for this place.

Its going on 3:00am while I’m watching this. Everything looks so good that my mouth is watering. I’m from New England, born and raised, I’ve been eating fried seafood my whole life. There’s nothing better than fresh fresh seafood and steamed clams in the world. Great video!

I used to have an Aunt and Uncle who lived in Essex and have amazing memories of sitting at the table with the fam. I ate so much of those fried clams. Was watching a completely unrelated video when this popped up in the suggestion box. So many good memories. Had no idea about the history of the place until now which makes those memories even better! I'm really craving those fried clams now.

Made my eyes 🥺. Folks I’m living in GA but raised in CT. Every chance I get I express how beautiful NE is. From the food to the beaches, even the people. GO and visit! You won’t regret it.

There's a childlike innocence about Mark's videos. I think that's why we keep on coming back for more.

Mark you are literally going through my childhood vacation destinations that I used to take with my parents back in the 80s and 90s, this is incredible! As a New Englander, this makes me very happy to see you enjoying all the wonderful food the New England coastline has to offer and introducing it to all of your subscribers!

When I was a kid I spent my summers on Cape Cod. In the town of Yarmouth there was a place called "Jerry's" on Rte 28. I used to work there serving ice cream and peeled onions for the onion rings. Jerry's use to have the best fried clams around. People would travel for miles to get them. I would go into the walk in cooler to get things and while inside I would peer at the clams inside the small container they were packed in. They were still alive and wiggling. The secret to good fried clams is hot hot grease. "Jerry's" is still there but Jerry himself is no longer the owner. Jerry was a workaholic during the summer months who worked sixteen hours a day seven days a week. He could be cranky too. When summer season ended his relatives would run the store during off season and his wife would not let him step foot inside the store. Jerry and his wife were good people.

Around midnight, I watched this. I got so hungry for seafood. Then, afterwards, I wanted a Revere Beach Roast Beef sandwich. It all looked so good. I'm going to one or both of those places.. probably this weekend. Thanks Mark! I loved this.

What fun! I get so hungry, even after eating, while watching these scrumptious videos! Mark, you must have quite a remarkable metabolism! I love New England, and a gastronomical grand tour during foliage is a culinary paradise. Your Ogunquit stop was, inclusively, especially sentimental... a veritable Maine event: the staff at a piano-bar lobster restaurant there found out that I play the piano -- I got pressed into service for the open mic singalong and never got to finish dinner!
