5 Things I HATE About Having Pet Birds! | TheParrotTeacher

Hello Parrot and Bird fans! Having pet birds can be tough!

I know sometimes I find it difficult. So I thought I'd do a video about the things I find frustrating/difficult about having 7 parrots at home!

As an obvious disclaimer, I love keeping them really and if I couldn't get over these problems I wouldn't still be keeping them or making content about them!

BUT, hopefully this video may prepare new owners and reassure existing ones that we all feel like this sometimes.

Any comments or if you have other questions feel free!

The floating feathers, the birdie dust, and the millet shells 😍 he also lovingly regurgitated on the radiator at the weekend 🤣

Even with all of the stress, we still adore them 🥹

Agree completely! I've only had my cockateil for a month or so, and already I'm realising my life has changed 100%! I hope the benefits outweigh the costs, right now I'm not too sure! Thanks for your honesty and your advice. Enjoy your holiday if you get to go!

Completely relate to ALL of these points. OMG the constant hoovering 😂. Thank you also for mentioning the emotional cost. Sometimes that bonding/love for them goes hand in hand with SUCH worry and concern for their wellbeing, particularly as they’re essentially wild animals in a captive environment and you constantly have to learn and adapt and do your best for them in an environment they’re not naturally particularly suited for which can make them vulnerable to so many things. On the whole, definitely worth it though and I wouldn’t give it up for anything 🦜❤

I want to add a couple things that I felt is difficult: wearing earrings/jewelry, body sprays/perfume. I do strongy agree with all of the dislikes especially not being able to go on a holiday or go somewhere over night. My stresses were the guilt I felt if I came home from work late or if I went somewhere and I was gone to long.

I think people should do videos like this more often. Loving something or someone means accepting and working through their flaws, not ignoring them! I love my birds, but that doesn't mean I never had moments of getting outside to take a breath because one of them is having a tantrum and I can't bear the repetitive noise thanks to misophonia. Funny thing, tho, if this video was called "5 things I HATE about having kids", it would still make sense, you would still have all the right to feel like this, but I guess society is not ready for this conversation hahaha

I totally agree! I love my two Amazons and my one con year but yes, we can be a lot at times to deal with it, thank you for your honesty, and hopefully people that are wanting a bird or watch your video first, so they can be sure they’re making the right decision.

I have chickens atm, but I have had parrots before. I found I couldn't wear green nail polish as my chooks would try to eat my fingers (I guess they looked like peas to them), and another thing that irks me about birds in general is that they are diurnal. They get up and go to bed with the sun. For night owls like me, that can be a bit tough having to get up early in the morning to give them breakfast, but you gotta do it. Overall though, life is definitely better with them :) Good points, and important for people considering birds as pets to know.

Today I was a bit tired and I think it was a bit annoying to have to wash the floor in my bird room. I couldn't bear to find the floor scrubber, so I lay on all fours with a sponge and cloth... Afterwards I let my birds out of their cages... That's where all the fun is ❤
And now I can start over with the floor wash... 😂
There are also days like this when the energy is low. But things have to be fixed anyway. Important to remember before bringing your bird friend home

Great video as usual! People always look at me like I’m crazy when I tell them the negatives to having a bird. They can’t understand why I would change my life and routine so much for these precious little guys. The number of times I’ve disappointed friends because I can’t go out with them like I used to, or I can’t play video games with them even after the birds are back in their cages for bed (my computer and consoles are in the same room as the cages), is growing exponentially.
Having a bird is like having a second job, and being the parent to a lifelong toddler in one, but I wouldn’t change it for anything. Can’t wait til I actually have a wife and family so it’s not just me doing it all 😂
I still have to solve that vacation one. I’m gonna have to teach someone to look after them for a week or so depending on whatever plans are made for this year. The budgies are still bonded to each other, and don’t do much with me, but I’m def gonna need someone to interact with my conure on top of changing their food and water daily.

Lack of freedom: I think my neighbours know when I go to the bathroom because my Cockatiel screams the house down 😂

That being said he recently went to a family member for a sleep over one night and it felt weird not being "shouted at" for leaving the room lol

For me, it's the hormones and biting. My male cockatiel (10 months old) is going through puberty right now and it's awful. The biting is terrible. I've had cockatiels in the past when I was a kid and NEVER had a bird bite so much. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I've tried everything (extending sleep time to 12 hours, keeping him occupied with foraging and toys during the day outside his cage, rewarding good behavior, walking away when he bites for a while, etc) and he still bites out of nowhere. He honestly scares me because he's so unpredictable. All of the other things you mentioned don't bother me that much, but the biting (really HARD bites, not nibbles, often drawing some blood) is really getting to me. I really hope his hormones settle down soon. I just am at a loss.

I am fortunate. There's a former colleague I live very close to that is very happy to take Sky (GCC) for a few days if I need her to. She has 2 cockatoos herself. Sky has taken to her husband and will spend alot of time perched on his head.

I agree and I only have one! He’s a handful but I love him 😅 I actually wish I had more.😊

Really love and appreciate this video!! although i love my little one there are definitely times i can get a bit frustrated and I feel there is a big portion of the bird community out there that judge you for it... for example if you get frustrated with your little one being really loud on a specific day other owners are very quick to say well then you shouldn't have gotten a bird then... Im well aware my conure is known for its noise and i dont mind it there are just some days i get a little frustrated and i think that is 100% okay.. and its nice to know im not alone!!!! My little one loves tantrums and to poop the second he comes out the cage but i love him anyway

Lost my quaker last spring and miss the noise and his antics so after finally moving into a retirement lake home searched for birds and found a rescue that had 2 conures that had

Thank you for your video. Worst things with my cockatiels is the poop, then chewing. The parrotlets are so much easier. However the cockatiels are mischievous and funny too. They all have their own special sweet traits and are very much individuals. I love them al regardless.

Another thing: their intelligence! Their ability to learn and use words, solve problems, read your body language and know how you are thinking, etc. means that they can be really interesting and fun pets, but they also really know how to get into trouble when they are in that sort of mood. When he wanted to be a stinker, my Green Cheek Conure would do ALL the things he knew irritated me when he noticed I was tired or having a bad day. He was also an expert at pushing the line really far without technically breaking rules I set for him when he wanted to to be annoying.

It's just part of the package of dealing with animals that are so intelligent. Luckily I could handle all that and I loved my little bag of feathers, but not everyone is capable of dealing with that for so many years.

I only have one and I feel all of these, I can't imagine with an entire flock. I wasn't ready for all of this when I got mine so I'm sure this video will be helpful for a lot of new owners !
