He did what Leonard Bernstein did. He had a spare right there on the music stand, so that in the event of losing one, he could grab the other, and not lose the beat. Very clever! Dropping batons mid-performance happens so much, though.

My condoctor did this once but threw it across the room and nobody noticed but me and I started laughing quietly and everyone was like what because he wasn't t there and then I was like "did nobody see that"
