if you take the Steam hardware survey with that, Gabe shows up to your house an hour later.

If you assume that this thing really was meant to be used with a controller only, two things make a lot more sense:
1. The recovery button taking you to the BIOS
2. The BIOS offering a virtual keyboard

I didn't realize my 3600/RX 580/8GB Ram prebuilt was almost biblically accurate valve hardware.

It's so on brand for valve to make their console feel "alive", especially with how many sentient one-eyed robots they have in their games :)

I love the fact this video just briefly turns into a Tyler McVicker video, thats absolutely hilarious

That has to be my favorite front panel I've ever seen. Best implementation of a touch-based power button imo. It makes the machine feel alive in a way

I think the best bit of all this is that Newell was one of Microsoft's early developers, being a key developer on the first three releases of Windows and leading the development of the Windows 95 version of Doom, in a direct effort to prove Windows was a viable gaming platform.

It must have been kinda sad for him seeing Windows 8 try and butcher the user experience and open nature of PC gaming, knowing he was one of the people which helped establishing Windows as THE platform for PC gaming.

I'd buy that case if Valve sold it just for that power button alone, so cool

Setting, Valve HQ, Meeting Room 3
"So you see Gabe, we think we can hold off on Half Life 3 a little bit longer"
*Gabe shudders*
"Ah, Sir? Isn't holding off the plan?"
*Gabe rises from his chair*
"Someone just booted a Steambox... MY Steambox. I thought you said it was destroyed!"
*While rising from his chair, the Newell Choak grasps a mid-ranking employee*
"FIND IT! BRING IT TO ME!"

I'm a cave-being. '55 was a good year. It's refreshing, watching someone do stuff that complete eludes me. Carry on.

whats insane is that, its so well made. for an internal testing system, it is so thought out. like the case system overall is so clean and nice. the design and everything is awesome

Funny how Gabe, the guy whose name appears in the credits of Windows 1.0, is the highest profile figure pushing for gaming on Linux.

Valve should just make these computer cases to sell, that button is godly! (It has some capacitive touch sensor like the valve index controllers and steam deck has)

This device must have been Valve’s last attempt at using Windows, getting fed up and then going all in with Linux

This is why Valve needs to make desktop PCs, this computer is so cool. That presence detecting power button alone is reason enough to buy it lol.

The internal miniDP is most likely a feature planned for VR headset (routing DP to the front of the case in the future), in 2016 many GPUs actually had internal HDMI or DP for this use case (you were meant to route the cable through the front of your PC to have extra lenght of the cable since cables of the VR headsets are propriatery and do not play well with extension cables). Case manufacturers were expected to follow suit but they never did and VR headsets just got longer cables, USB-C entered the scene and in general the idea died. But it was pretty much well alive in 2016/2017, my 1060 had internal HDMI. The extra DP on the rear is most likely meant for troubleshooting if the GPU is faulty and routes to the iGPU.
