I'm 54, single, Christian since '78, son was murdered, job went to India, weigh 79 pounds, I'm bi-polar, my rent it increasing, bought a foreclosure renovated by a lottery winner...should I close my credit cards? ...WHAT!?!?

Let's review: 1) She'll make it brief 2) She's a 54-year-old single mother 3) She's been a Christian since 1978 4) She lives with her 16-year-old son who is good and has been employed for 7 months 5) She lost her job with the phone company in 2008 which caused her to collect unemployment 6) One of her sons was murdered 7) In 11 years time, she will receive a small pension from her former employer 8) 7 years ago, a woman at the Social Security Office noticed she was dangerously underweight 9) She is bipolar 10) She "has a lot of issues going on" 11) She also collects SS disability 12) After her rent went up, she bought a foreclosed property that was fixed up by a lottery winner 13) She has a $329 monthly mortgage payment 14) In the past 3 years, she's put 10k towards the mortgage 15) She drives a 10-year-old, paid-off car. 16) She's a "real saver." Now, ladies and gentlemen, after all of that, her question: "Should I close credit cards because I'm on the dole?" ENDLESS PREAMBLE APPRECIATED.

People can get nervous on the phone, especially with someone famous like Dave Ramsey; they'll go into "fight or flight" mode and just started talking without much focus (when I called the show once, I wrote down some notes beforehand for this exact reason). It took her awhile to get to her rather straightforward question, and Dave had to get her refocused on why she was calling.

For him, it's a matter of keeping the show flowing and taking as many calls as he can with the time he has. Lots of people are waiting on hold until he can get to them, and he's got some strict time limits to follow to make room for commercial breaks, too.

All that being said, I agree that Dave could have been a little kinder in asking her to cut to the chase, though in his defense, she did have to get told twice to speed it up. He's usually pretty kind with ramblers.

As soon as I hear someone say, "I'll make this brief", I walk away. The phrase "To make a long story short" seems to only be uttered by people who can't shut up.

closing a credit card is not bad but make sure your utilization ratio is not very high. EXAMPLE you have 2 accounts that are each 1000 dollars, you close 1 account so you now have 1000 in credit but your card has a 900$ balance. your credit will hurt if your debt utilization ratio is not good.
