Stood with my bro on the N side of the track as MH shot past and hit the bottom of Hawthorne Hill. Something by the left rear broke and to the incredibly loud sound of metallic clanking, scrubbing tyres, Armco bending and the V8 crackling on the overrun the whole thing slithered up and into the cat tray.
After a while MH got out, had a peek at the back end and with a “that’s bust, I’ll get me bike” shrug, sauntered off stage.
Thanks for the upload, haven’t seen any film of the event before. The silent downward camera view doesn’t quite capture the racket and speed, but nearly 50 years later (eeek) I remember it well.

Jo Siffert's fatal accident in 1971 was exactly there. And also caused by a broken rear suspension. But the dynamics, unfortunately, were different as Siffert's BRM flipped over and exploded.
