Recently, Scott Kelby came up with an idea on how to teach photography composition in a way that would make people truly "get it" in just about an hour. He held his class in an open amphitheater on a balmy, starry, Florida night with 150 students in attendance to share some professional secrets that will get you thinking the next time you go out and shoot.

I had the privilege of watching this with my Liberty University Photo 361 class. I will tell you, this was one of the best textures I could have watched at this point in my amateur career. I went out and tried a few of these things this evening and what a difference it makes! Thank you for making this!

It's not laziness to go to a live seminar. It can clarify a lot of questions that you didn't pick up in the book. I have Scott's "Lightroom 3", but after going to the Matt K's seminar on LR3, the whole program makes so much more sense. Thanks to the Kelby Group for your service to the less qualified....we appreciate it!

Scott makes some really solid, useful training materials. This program looks great to me. I'm a confident photog for over 30 years and I am always looking for insight on how to make my compositions better. I look at others work, talk to the shooters, ask them what goes thru their minds when the compose. It's a lifelong search. Thanks Scott. You efforts are appreciated here sir.

after reading some of these comments, I wonder why we bother going to school or why read a book, after all, all we need is to practice and practice some more, well that is true but reading and learning is fundamental. And what if Scott is making money selling books, don't thousand of others. What I love about Scott is he is very humorous in his teaching, he makes it fun. if you want buy the books then do, and if you don't, then surely you don't need it.

However ... "Consulting the rules of composition before taking a photograph is like consulting the laws of gravity before going for a walk." - Edward Weston

I believe you, there is no book or no one that can teach you to take better photograph, but taking class read some book won't hurt either, and i think it would help enhance your skill. Although you gotta shoot all the time too. so have your camera all the time, you don't wanna miss anything!!! happy shooting errbody!!!

@JRCrowley it's crush the composition not competition. But, I guess it is still a little aggressive / violent.

The hardest part of composition is not remembering some stupid 'rule' to follow, it's learning to open your eyes, immerse yourself in the environment and, most difficult of all, to trust your innate sense of aesthetic. Only by taking pictures that YOU think look good will you ever develop a 'style' to call your own. If blindly following the rule of thirds (ROT) was any guarantee, we'd all be masters and photography would be an utterly trivial exercise. It's supposed to be hard and require work.

@ZidaneSteiner
if you keep doing things the wrong way you'll never get better. a book wont make you better, but it'll help steer you in the right path.

@ZidaneSteiner Exactly! Kelby is all about selling books to poor saps. This guy is no more a photographer then my dog.

You have to know your equipment and it's capabilities before learning anything else. My advice READ YOUR MANUAL! before doing anything else.

Are you kidding me? For sure a book can help you! It's true that only if you go out and shoot you'll get good photos, but a book (for example the digital photography book-series, which helped me really much!) can deliver you important information before you experience those things yourself. You don't have to go out, shoot on high ISO and realize later: "Oh all my photos are noisy!" (just an example) books can prevent things like this.

@roktopus True enough. IMO, the whole concept of 'photography' has been hijacked. It's no longer about thinking about the scene and trusting your sense of aesthetic. (You can't sell that!) Instead it's all about megapickels and red-ring lenses and lots of software to polish your turds. As for the post-processing craze, 80% of photography should happen BEFORE you press the shutter. Today, that ratio is completely reversed and a typical 'photographer' is just a computer dweeb with a camera.

if is a great book and sales great why do you need to mark it in youtube, plus make a catchy title. all we expect in youtube is free. tutorial, videos, free. I will stop watching your videos.
