My ASL teacher is deaf and she told us that when she got her hearing aides she was shocked to find out that you can hear traffic from inside your house/apartment.

I read about a guy who didn’t realise cats purring had sound until he got cochlear implants. Freaked him the f out when his friend’s cat sat on his lap and started purring. He stopped petting the cat (cat not happy about that), and asked his friend why the cat was making noise? Was it ok? Mate had to explain it was purrring, not purring had sound, not just vibrations ❤

To all the deaf people who may be reading this. There’s nothing that is truly silent if it interacts physically with something else. Every little thing makes some type of noise. Some more subtle and softer than others but still there!

From what I've heard, people who are born deaf but are able to have their hearing restored are surprised to find out that the sun makes no noise.

My ASL prof told us a story that as a kid he would pick up the phone and pretend to talk on it as a way of mimicking his hearing parents. Most times he would put the phone down but not back on the receiver, after getting a hefty bill in the mail his parents questioned him and his siblings. It was then he revealed what he was doing, not knowing the phone was used for people to talk to one another distantly 😂😂😂

When my brother got his first hearing aids he was surprised that rain made sound. I remember he was about four and I was seven and we just sat in the window while he listened to rain.

I saw a story of a former deaf person and he said he thought sunsets made sound, that's genuinely crazy to think about, and another story of someone who got those things to make him hear, and then he took them off because everything was too Loud, his wife convinced him after 25 years to put them on again, they now live the woods, and he was surprised of how calming it was, turns out he thought the sound of wind was the cars
