I did like that subtle detail that you hear people talking and kids playing when you came up to Alexandria's walls.
You see Rick's face go from looking tense to at ease

The show technically could have ended when they decided to go in and walked towards the gates. That would have been a great ending. Obviously not realistic though since there was lots of story left etc

personal opinion: TWD should've ended outside the walls of Alexandria, with Rick smilling looking at the gates that is slowly opening (with kids voices playing like in the tv show), holding Carl in 1 hand, and Judith on the other hand, with Michonne smiling to him and he nods, showing everyone else being happy around them, screen goes back to the opening gates and it shines brightly, roll credits.
happy ending. what a show that could've been.

of course comic existed, and it's a drama tv show with gray characters each trying to stay alive, i won't argue with that.
