Virtual Reality | Oliver Arms: Don't Take My Sunshine Away

Jason Haam is pleased to present Don’t Take My Sunshine Away, an exhibition of new paintings by Oliver Arms. This will be the artist’s second solo show, since his inaugural exhibition at the gallery in 2018.

The title of the exhibition—Don’t Take My Sunshine Away—is a reference to the artist’s unwavering hope in the face of shock, loss, and loneliness caused by current global progressions. The presentation for this exhibition aims to create a moment of tranquility, rest, and reflection for the uncertainties present in the outside world.

Featuring six new paintings by the artist, the exhibition will display a single work in the gallery’s first and fourth exhibition halls, while the second and third exhibition halls will be dedicated to a close viewing of two mid-sized works. The windows of the gallery will be covered up and benches brought from the artist’s studio will be available for seating, transforming the gallery space into a space of reverence and introspection.

Through the works, Arms speaks to the emotional intensity rooted in his relationship to his practice. Arms uses a distinct, abstract visual language to convey a depth of emotions through the multilayered images of his works. His fluency in employing color becomes the basis for creating these complex forms and lyrical compositions, and the visual intensity of his works allows for wholly immersive experiences, in which viewers are presented with the tactility and sublimity of Arms’s practice.

Created before and during the pandemic, these new works carry the struggle of the recent past with each layer of paint. Even their titles are contextualized within the frame of the emotions, memories, and experiences associated with the current global situation—Optimism’s Flame (2020-2021), How Much Language Does Silence Need? (2017-2021), El Ayer Se Fue (2019). Ever attuned to his environment, Arms creates a refuge from the discords of the outside world and shares his peace with those who stay long enough to seek it.

The exhibition will be on view from February 25 – April 13, 2021.
