Sidhaanth Suryavanshi, Puneeth Rajkumar, Raju Srivastava - three popular celebs who suffered a heart attack either while they were at the gym or soon after a workout has many wondering if they are also making mistakes with their exercise regimen.
"How fit you feel has nothing to do with how fit you are biologically, especially when it comes to the heart," says Dr Devi Shetty, well known cardiologist.
"More than 50% patients who undergo angioplasty or surgery, had no symptoms." He says it's important to ask why some of those who seem to be so fit are falling dead in gyms.

Yes, Check yourself before any heavy exercise is important. But many research also shows that building muscle is the way to live longer and healthy.

It all depends on the level of fitness you have. Build it up gradually. What is extreme exercise for me could be moderate for a fitter individual. Be careful not to overdo and at the same time, don't use this as an excuse to stay away from exercise

I am 80Kg with 15% BF. I am lifting weight and also run since last 2 years. I can tell you quality of life is much much better than a pot belly person. I don't get out of breath by just walking or taking stairs. Diet is everything. Majority of Indians eat 90% carbs and almost no protein specially vegetarians which causes insulin resistance. That's why North india is diabetic capital. Eat 40% carbs and 40% protein( not daal or rajma rather chiken eggs fish lamb pork low fat yogurt whey) and 20% fat with green veggies.

Elder younger middle age people all need to exercise. Dr is talking about those with known pre existing heart conditions and are on prescription drugs for the same.
I understand and agree with Doc that at the end of the session one should feel fresh n not sozzled
Secondly in gym one shouldn't hurry amongst reps.
Six pack is not health
Fitness is subset of health
So we should work out to lead healthy lives

Regular strength and cardio excercise is good for the body and also do health checkup once in a year. If you don't do it you may become diabetic or bp patient. Please don't get comfortable just because doctor is mentioning extream excercise side effects. Extream is always bad and regular is always good.

Yup, had first attack at 41 and I was a regular gym goer. Now I’ve reduced weights and don’t lift until failure and max time in gym is 35 mins per session.

With due respect to the doctor. People who are not doing any exercise in India are getting Diabetes and BP and Knee surgery because inactive legs.
I am 65 I do all kinds of heavy and light exercises. I am OK

Also When you feel dehydrated you start to wobble a little your bp drops, at this moment if you drink any fluid that has sodium in it then there is sudden rise in bp.
This will lead to irregular heart beat and if your heart can't balance it then you will become unconscious and may require CPR else you're dead.

Sir with due respect, the medical professionals in the country have not been keeping in touch with the advancements in sports and physical medicine.
People do not go to the gym anymore to run on the treadmill and do cardiovascular exercises. The focus has clearly moved to muscle training and muscle strengthening to improve many metabolic processes including muscle resistance. I urge that antediluvian medical professionals and businessmen like you and your cohort keep up.

Had 4 stents on 2022. Did a half marathon 7 months after my angioplasty . My first doctor gave me the go signal to do more. My 2nd doctor discourage me from doing anything vigorous. My first doctor stopped my aspirin after taking it for a year and was told to just take clopidogrel for life. My 2nd doctor told me to take aspirin and clopidogrel for life. Who do I follow ?

Toi needs to give more context here. The doctor is emphasising that people should work out regularly and shouldn't ramp it up too quickly only to quit soon after.

Somehow people here have taken Bodybuilding to be exercising for health, not realizing that its an extreme sport. Anyway people go to the gym more out of vanity than health.
As long as one understands what he is doing and has gradually built up work capacity over the years its all good but those looking for quick weight reduction or building muscles are the ones prone to injury and other cardiac disasters.

Dr. Shetty is a renowned doctor and knows what he is talking about. For most people walking and yoga is all that they need to keep healthy.
