To put it as a main comment, story goes they were struggling for a final song for superunknown. He had writers block. He was sitting in his house one day and a bird flew into one of his windows and fell to the ground with a broken neck. The rest is history and one of the greatest drum licks all time since Phil collins.

He lived like a martyr but he died, just like suicide. Rip Chris

I saw him many times while he was alive. Especially his solo tours. It was a bonding experience for my dad and I.

I think if you asked the average person how they felt about a song glorifying suicide, sung by a man who eventually committed suicide - they’d have some interesting feelings. First to mind would probably be “no duh”. Of course this was going to be the end for him. This was the only end.

But it’s not his propensity for it that a person might claim makes this song problematic. It’s the glorification that gives people cause for issue, and then the propensity that damns it.

For me though what is more damning than his lyrics is how beautiful his guitar is. Its structure, its form.... It’s a beautiful, gorgeous, heart breaking song. It’s a brilliant piece of music and I feel like it needs to be heard by more people if not for its poeticism, then at least for its warning. This - and all beautiful songs glorifying suicide in this way - should not be viewed as something to be idealized.

Their description of suicide as a thing of beautify is an indicator of the path that they are on, and if you ever - EVER - find yourself feeling in a similar way, tell someone else. Tell someone you love, or anyone close to you at all. Get help.

This has been a public service announcement
