polyphony: a metamodernist grand narrative for digital documentary by Judith Aston i-Docs, University of the West of England, Bristol, 10th November 2021 held in the context of the virtual lecture series, hosted by the University of Bayreuth as a part of the research project Digital Documentary Practices – Topical paradigm shifts and the potential of emerging practices to participate in public discourses
In this talk, Judith will outline her latest thinking around polyphony and multi-perspectivity, linking it to her work of over thirty years with interactive media in the fields of creative media practice, documentary and visual anthropology. She will explain how polyphony provides a framework for looking at the multi-perspectival aspect of digital documentary and why she sees metamodernism as being a particularly helpful approach through which to engage with complexity and uncertainty in ways which are dialogical as opposed to monological and which can help to break down unhelpful modes of binary thinking.
