I'm also ethnically Slavic and was brought up in Ireland so I always appreciate something like this as a way to reconnect to my ethnic heritage 👍

When I was a child in elementary school there was an older Russian storyteller that would come in a couple times a year. She would tell stories of Baba Yaga with her hut and iron teeth to a captive audience of children sitting wide eyed on the old woven rug in the school library. My memory of the actual tales is cloudy but the feeling of being completely drawn in by a story spun by a master I will always remember fondly.

In the States, and likely elsewhere in the West, our connection to folk traditions is very attenuated and diffuse. What a lovely book, even without knowing the particulars, that exemplifies a way to bring magic to everyday life, and everyday life to magic! Thank you for sifting through the many volumes of no interest whatever to find such gems as this.

I've been watching you for 3 years and your content is pure gold. I'm glad you touched on this because it means a lot. I'm Polish and come from a spiritual background. It's not just wisdom, but also a symbol of our true identity, culture, origin and history. We're forced to take on a different identity instead of appreciating our own and when you steal someone's identity, you rob them of their very soul/spirit hence the phrase, the Slavic Spirit. People like you keep the flame burning.🕯

in Bosnia we call her Baba Roga and she is such an interesting persona. Reading Women who run with the Wolves is how I got truly interested in her. That story of Vasalisa captured me, I read another book about that story and I am also into Witchcraft so thank you so much for sharing.

Great review, thank you as always 😌 there is this masterpiece of video game (Black Book) that puts you in the skin of Vasilisa and walks you through this part of the Slavic folklore inviting you to learn the tales and mysteries of the land around you while you serve as a koldun, commanding demons, exorcising angry spirits… highly advisable for anyone with a slight interest. As an Andalusian, I find the Slavic myths so far from my own notions and structures that I never know what to expect around the next corner. I love it.

When I was learning cross stitch, nearly two decades ago, it was more like remembering than learning. My aunt who taught me was called away to the phone and when she got back I was doing things she couldn't. An odd mental picture turned up of a flock of young ladies in long white frocks out on a smooth green lawn in front of a castle. The footmen moved our big embroidery frames out there as it was a nice day. A slim young miss with brown hair was brought to my attention. 17 years old and seated to her embroidery on the big wooden frames in a wide brimmed hat. Giggling with the other girls. Is this where I learned it?

I know madame Pamita, she’s a sweet and wonderful woman, and a great card reader. She also plays in an all girl surf rock band, The Neptuna’s. Support MP!

Dziękuję for making this book review! I was born and raised in Poland, living in the Western Europe for a while now. I’m particularly interested in Baba Jaga since a few years back she made it very clear that she’s in my framework. It’s a powerful presence (not always nice or gentle, but so strong, wise and direct). I’m slowly making my way through Quareia but ever since she showed up, I’m also casually looking around for some useful information about her specifically and slavic magic in general. This book is the first resource to which she responds “yeah! go get this one!”.. ok ok, I’ll get it then 😅

Glad you liked this book! I met someone who sold me an Altar Doll of Hekate made in the tradition of Madame Pamita.

I was quite skeptical due to what I would call a western reading of eastern ideas, but after all I think I'll give it a shot. Something that is rarely discussed, though, is that what is described in such books is most of the time quite regional. A Slavic practice in Ukraine is not the same as a Slavic practice in Poland, in Russia or else. As a matter of fact, a Slavic practice from Eastern Ukraine is probably not the same as a Slavic practice in Western Ukraine. And to be even more precise - in folklore, practices might be very, very different from village to village. I live in Eastern Europe, in Bulgaria, and we do have Slavic influences here, too. As a matter of fact, many scholars would place us in the Slavic ethnic group (which is not the case, but still). We do have the idea of a house spirit, but it is completely different from the domovoi. We do have the idea of the lake female spirits, but it is completely different from the rusalki. What I'm trying to say is - if you have Slavic heritage, do try and search the ethnographic data for the exact region. Start there. Then expand. The Slavic ethnic group is huge. And another remark - folk practices are not destroyed here, quite the contrary. The totalitarian regime actually kind of helped them, because the church has never had such power here and has never had the chance to destroy the folk beliefs. People rarely know the deep meaning behind the magical deeds, but the thing is that knowledge of the reasoning behind magical acts is not needed in order for them to be successful. Most grannies will tell you "This is how it's done" and that's it, that's all that is needed, in order to preserve a tradition - vicious grandmas being a huge requirement :D

Thanks for another entertaining book review. Already added it to my wish-list as it looks beautiful and interesting. When you mentioned making everything you do useful, beautiful and magic I had to think of Briana Saussy's Making Magic who in her book helps you find the magic in everything you do daily. 😊
