Artificial intelligence's contribution to the global economy is predicted to reach almost $16 trillion by 2030. With the global volume of data expected to quadruple by 2025, how can Africans seize the opportunity? DW’s Edith Kimani takes on the issue at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Cape Town, with Sylvia Makario, head of Geospatial Technologies and co-founder of Hepta Analytics in Kenya, Alex Liu, managing partner and Chairman at A.T. Kearney Inc. in the US, Murat Sönmez, managing director and head of the Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution Global Network at the WEF and Frans Cronje, co-founder and CEO at the Data Prophet in South Africa.

Clouds are zone of storage of datas and from there applications are done. Keeping and protecting the clouds as data banks is a new power for sovereignty.

Individuals can still do a lot. Anyone can build a data center. All you need is a computer and internet access. Electricity and internet access are still challenges, but there are places in Africa where both are reliable. Start there. Eventually you can build out things like cloud infrastructure, SaaS, IaaS, and PaaS. There is so much free open source software available, that can be used to build those sorts of things. Building up the electricity and internet infrastructure will make all of these more viable.

Implicit bias plays a large factor in who is creating and manipulating data. It isn’t merely ethical or unethical but what we unconsciously are conditioned to value or not can have the greatest impact.
