Each time the carapace lobsters break their shells along the surface, they increase in size by 20 per cent. Young lobsters molt several times a year, but they start molding annually after reaching one pound. They shed every part of the hard stuff, including the lining of the intestine, after they found a safe place to hide, Bayer says. “When the lobster emerges from its old shell, it’s all wrinkly.
