I remember our coaches in Little League told us outfielders that this was the guy to emulate. He did everything correctly in the field, and he had some pop in that bat!

I hated that guy when he helped the Tigers win over the St Louis Cardinals in the 1968 WS. What a great player !!!

How about more on Al Kaline’s fielding? Tremendous defensive player and throws on spot to get the out.

I knew he was a great player but I was only 8 years old during the 68 world series and al was a bit past his prime and he played in an era of legendary players so al kinda flew under the radar at times but he was a model of high level consistency and I never knew how good he really was until years later

As a youngster growing up in Detroit in the 1950's, I idolized Al Kaline. I have two stories about Al that probably few people know.
Sometime in 1957 or '58 I believe, word spread through Detroit that the Tigers were negotiating a deal with the Yankees
to swap their young superstar Kaline for 7 or 8 Yankee 2ed stringers. One of the city news papers printed a special edition,
complete with a forecasted Tiger lineup with such Yankee names as Lumpee, Seabern, Howard, and a few more players.
The next day the Yankees issued a statement that they had no idea how the rumor got started but they had no intention in
swapping a third of their team for Kaline.
Another story involves a contest (run by who I don't know)) to coin a nickname on the young Tiger star.
The winner: "Old Salty"! Al hated it! Fortunately, the name never stuck. Kaline later quipped that he was
happy to be known as "Just Plain Al". I don't know when it was that he gained the moniker "Mr. Tiger", but
I suspect that was one he truly enjoyed. RIP, Al! And thanks for all the great memories!

My boyhood hero. I always considered him as the Tigers version of Stan Musial (from the Cardinals)

My hero as a kid. Always a thrill to see him come to the plate, or make a great play in right field. Mr. Tiger.

Sadly the only time I saw him play on TV was in the 68 World Series, due to black outs. It was worth the wait.

My summer ideal was the Tigers when they had "the K Boys, " Kaline and Kuenn. I have never forgiven Tiger GM Bill Dewitt for trading away Harvey Kuenn! Similarly, Cleveland fans never forgave Frank Lane for trading away Rocky Colavito.

Not disregarding the other Tigers greats who came before Al Kaline, but in my humble opinion, he was Mr. Tiger as he spent all 22 seasons with the Tigers. It took him 16 seasons to reach a World Series with Detroit but his Tigers deserved to win as Tigers fans of all ages and backgrounds waited nearly a quarter of a century to see the Tigers win the World Series.
