I think the word is not boring but how AI and the gloomy job market that have discouraged people from coding. Humans are motivated by doing something that is rewarding but if coding is not going to give you a job, or you're being told that jobs will be tougher to get or that AI will replace software engineering, people will have less motivation to learn coding. It will become sort of boring because it doesn't give back as much anymore. Also you don't get the dopamine hit when you figure things out on your own if AI can help you get the answers easily.

I got tired for a different reason, I wasn't getting good. Either due to procrastination or just not having enough help.
I stopped totally and considered myself a loser in this.
Until cybersecurity came along (pen-testing). This has helped me achieve something. I now have a local certification in it and am currently on an AD certification. I am also taking two of Hack the Box's certifications.
But the strange thing is this has reignited my love for coding and web development.
Coding is super important, even in cybersecurity.
Now I am building timetables for my coding and also my cybersecurity endeavours. I loveee itttt

My problem with programming in 2024 is everything revolves around frameworks. I still remember starting projects from an empty text editor. We did everything ourselves. No component libraries, no frameworks, no other tools. You are still an inspiration for me after all these years.

Was layed-off on 20th December. The mere thought of sitting in front of my computer and coding makes me feel ill right now. Have decided to take a few weeks away from coding, then I'll build something to do with robotics so I can learn React (I've got your course already!).

A side-project is always my personal choice when I have this feeling.

I was laid off in June 2023, gave up after not getting a software dev job in 6 months and decided maybe it’s best to close that chapter. I’m glad I did as the tech industry is really bad with unrealistic high expectations and low pay for applicants. Ultimately coding ended up giving me depression, I got lonely mostly spending time doing work on a computer and felt like I needed “people” roles instead.
But also, I still can’t find ANY job albeit my experience in several other areas in work. 18 months unemployed.

Reflecting on your goals is really important. I just opened up my notes after watching the video. I wrote down some stuff 2 years ago, like what my goals were and stuff, reading this gave me that 3 AM motivation kind of thing, it's extremely useful.
Thank you Brad <3

Thanks for summing this up, Brad, I had this confusions too in the past few months, I even considered to switch Dev work to PM work, to think in a product manager's way. You tips really helped, thanks

I have been a dev for about 10 years now. Went from DBA, Backend, Frontend, DevOps, Automation, Full Stack.. name it all. Been working on huge ETL project for the past 2 years, got burnt out and felt like not doing anything. Decided to just automate everything at home for fun. Now with AI integration, I've managed to create app designed for my house. It knows where to store files, it knows what to do when I ask questions. #1 is a great suggestion. Drop everything alafter work and start something new

1. Switch things up - learn new tech stack

2. Switch your work environment - go to a coffee shop, library, public work space, etc

3. change your workday routine - change up your study / work schedule

4. focus on the big picture - who’s your project gona help?

5. get inspired - watch podcasts / videos about ANY topic, doesn’t have to be coding related

6. reflect why you started? what drew you to coding?

7. change up your tools and workflow - change how you work, try new VS code/browser extensions, change your editor theme, etc

8. take some time and take up a new hobby that has nothing to do with coding!

All of these points are great, and ones I implement in my own life. Can confirm they work! My dad would get so upset when he heard I spent about $3k a year at coffee shops. I think it was a small investment for the hours it let me work and for keeping my sanity 😁

Always have a fun personal project on the side, also redo an old fun project and see how far you've come!

F. Hell, this is the best piece of advice I have found recently. I'm feeling a bit burned out without realizing it. Thanks. All the best in the new year.

Appreciate the advice outside of just coding. I'm one of those who wants to optimize a lot of my time to learn and keep progressing. But being at my desk for 8 hours for work, then another 4 hours for self-learning is not sustainable. Biggest hurdle is when I do something else, I always have that thought of "You could be doing tech". Always feeling like there's not enough time in the day to do what I want to fulfill both my hobbies, responsibilities and progression in tech.

Work envt really matters. I have experienced it. Helped me a lot on my creativity. Mostly I get bored working home so I go out for a coffee with my laptop. At first it was difficult to concentrate with crowed and music but then I get used to it and motivated when ppl like me work next to me and sit longer hrs. Learning new tech stack also another option to ignite motivation. Tech is always evolving there is always something new to learn. Keep up !

I think these are good tips Brad.
I also want to add that anything you will do even if you think it is fun, after certain time it will turn to a routine and boring task. In today's society we concentrate on the material and competitive side of things and we need to detach from this cycle of thought. Even some youtube or social media content creating can become boring and will eventually take its toll. Having a modest and healthy life, mentally and physically is more rewarding in the long term than the material/competitive side of things. The pressure of continuing to produce content to keep a youtube channel can also cause burnout. It is okay to accept to sit back and relax even if loosing something you will gain health and joy.

For me switching my environment to full terminal-based setup with Neovim as text-editor did everything for me. I regained my initial child-like spark for creating things
