I was certain that early Jean valjean and late Jean valjean were played by 2 different people because of how different they looked.

I know he as an actor was putting the character first in terms of trying to look like a gaunt prisoner. But 36 hours without water???? Is incredibly dangerous, he should have known that especially as a musical actor and put his health and the music at risk. Dehydrating himself ended up making his singing sound awful especially since they had to do several takes AND they were singing live instead of in a booth. It’s genuinely a miracle his voice didn’t get permanently damaged. His singing just didn’t really do it for me as Valjean.

Tbf, it was also on the directors and producers for allowing it and making it all live in the first place.

I mean I understand the authenticity of it but 36 hours without water is dangerous. They could’ve easily used makeup and special effects to achieve that emaciated and worn down look.
