I've been studying color theory for months now and I still don't get a lot of it.. this was helpful and I hope you could do more of these that show the perceived and local colors on different objects 😊

Johannes: “what color are the clouds?”
Greet: *white…*
Johannes: 😢
Greet: *no not white. The clouds are pink, and grey, and yellow, and black, and blue.*
Johannes: 😊

If youre yeaching yourself to paint, just try painting objects from photos first. Its easier to reference, but the more you do it, youd learn all the details that youve never noticed before like percieved colour. It really just means colour as you see it. When you finally move on to actual still life, youd start yonknow what details to look for.
But it would also teally help to learn basic colour theory, just mixing colours, so you jave some idea on how to mix all the more nuanced colours that are a mix of several different colours.
For example the percieved colour of shado in this clip is black with some purple, you might think its black and purple and since you can get purple with red and blue, you can mix black, red and blue to get it, but there are a lot of subtlties to colours, mixing it with a pre made purple paint and the one you mixed with red and blue is going to be different.

It’s so much more fun when you play around with colour! One thing I always try and remind myself when I’m painting, drawing, or whatever, is that I’m not trying to capture the exactness of what I’m drawing, I’m not doing hyper-realism, I’m just having fun and capturing an image or an idea in my own way, with my own colours. It doesn’t have to be a conventional colour with conventional shapes and conventional shading.

Colors are so difficult for me! The tones and placement make such a big difference

Though perceived colours are more realistic there’s also something cool about local colour… it’s cool how basic it is

What I've learned is that underpainting in blue would ll give a more realistic result.

I don't do watercolor, but your advice is so helpful!! Color theory can be hard to wrap your head around, and this vid definitely helped me 😁

this took me FOREVER to figure out and when i did it was from color dropping a random spot on a picture and realizing that the "black" was actually purple. it was just black in relation to everything around it

Sending much appreciation and admiration for how much helpful and practical information you share as you distill the knowledge from the wisdom of your experience and then communicate it all in an energetically efficient way, using practical terms with no superfluity or ego fluff to distract.

I struggle with this even though I understand the concept, its just so hard to get my brain to comprehend that there are multiple colors making up something that looks to be one color. If i look at an image, its really hard for me, but if I look at someone elses painting of the same image it makes perfect sense and i would be able to replicate it but not nearly as well if I just had a photo. Ive started using a color picker on different parts of an object so I can understand what the colors actually are and not just what my brain wants to perceive.

what a clean distillation of exactly why I will never make it in the visual arts

I consider the shadow as part of the object and would make the purple or a mix of yellow and black so it’s dark, but related.

I wish I could find teachers who use your style of communicating in all the subjects that interest me.

Your shorts are very good - they aid changes in light and color perception and how to transfer those articulated perceptions to paper.
